General Description
This position works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Mans the Sheriff’s office, greets and assists the public with Sherriff Office needs.
- Receives and processes arrestees into custody of institution; searches prisoners; takes charge of personal property.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of records, files and reports.
- Ensures the security and order of courtrooms prior to and during court sessions; searches courtroom and prisoners for contraband prior to entering court and before returning to lock-up; responds and carries out all orders of the judge.
- Arranges for and/or transports inmates to correctional and court facilities, etc.; reviews paperwork from clerk for accuracy and checks dockets before court date.
- Scans all persons; searches briefcases, bags, purses, etc.; assists handicapped and special needs persons.
- May operate alarm systems, camera system, computers, video taping equipment, pass code system and control panel in the control room.
- Sets up video arraignment and conference; manages attorney conferences with inmates.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Physical Demands
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

Special Certifications and Licenses
- Completion of Virginia Basic Jail Academy Training.
- Must meet and maintain all department and State training and education requirements for position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
