Position: English Language Development (ELD) Instructional Coach


Supervisor: Bilingual Director & Federal Programs Director

 

General Job Description:

The ELD instruction Specialist Will implement the professional development process across the curriculum, in addition to supporting teachers in delivering direct instruction to students.

 

The ELD Coach roles include the following:

 

1. Modeling of direct K-12 instruction to teachers using different classrooms and school sites to facilitate instruction with the application of best teaching practices to support ELs through explicit English Language Development Instruction and effective sheltered instruction techniques for ELs.

2. Enhancing teachers’ understanding of respecting and supporting students' home language and culture and the application of instructional strategies to optimize the learning for English learners. Coaching teachers to apply the most effective teaching tools, skills, and attitudes to increase student engagement.

3. Modeling scientifically research-based instruction for ELs, co-teaching, coaching and providing teachers with reflective, growth-producing feedback.

4. Facilitating job-embedded professional development that supports the curriculum using CCSS, and WIDA ELD Standards to support ELs.

5. Facilitating guidance of staff to use the data to drive instructional decisions for ELs.

6. Assisting staff in accessing information/resources to support instruction of English Language Development (ELD).

 

Qualifications:

1. Possess valid New Mexico Teaching PED Level II Teacher with a Bachelor’s Degree or National Board Certification with TESOL & Bilingual endorsements.

2. Evidence of success in the implementation of effective instructional practices in teaching English learners, based on student achievement data.

3. Five years of demonstrated knowledge, skills, and teaching success with English learners.

4. Experience working with ELs in low socio-economic populations.

5. Expertise in application and teaching with the most current technology.

6. Strong evidence of ability to work effectively and collaboratively with other educators

7. Ability to lead, facilitate, model and coach teachers in the effective use of student structures to optimize structured interaction and successful learning outcomes.

8. Must possess strong oral and written language skills.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

1. Work with the administrator(s) and teachers to communicate and support the development and implementation of staff Professional Development Plans.

2. Facilitate meaningful professional development strategies for teachers and administrators in instruction that will impact language acquisition for ELs.

3. Provide for the development, organization and implementation of district/school staff development activities for teachers in alignment with the Educational Plan for EL Student Success to improve educational practices in grades Kindergarten through 12 grades, as appropriate.

4. Offers instructional assistance by building on teachers’ knowledge base and increasing the repertoire of teaching skills to raise academic achievement for ELs.

5. Use district-identified assessment tools to facilitate training of instructional staff in the use, triangulation & disaggregation of data for data-driven instructional planning.

6. Engage teachers in collaborative and reflective classroom practices for Els.

7. Mandatory participation in all training and development programs for their professional growth and development by the district to stay current in education research practices, pedagogy and methodology that applies specifically to ELs.

8. Work collaboratively with other district and school personnel in developing staff development activities for ELs at both the school and district levels.

 

Additional Responsibilities:

 

1. Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.

2. Act professionally and ethically and adhere to professional standards at all times.

3. Demonstrate attention to punctuality, attendance, records and reports.

4. Maintain confidentiality of student and other professional information

5. Comply with policies, procedures and programs.

6. Begins and completes work within the allotted time.

7. Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.

 

Physical Requirements:

 

Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; communicate verbally and electronically; reach with hands and arms; stand and move throughout the building and/or to other facilities, and drive. Occasionally required to lift and/or exert a force of up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Work Environment:

 

Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Job responsibilities require both inside and outside assignments. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. Work hours are established in the employment contract. Additional work hours may be assigned by the immediate supervisor(s) within the parameters of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

 

Equipment/Material handled:

 

Must know how to properly operate or be willing to learn to operate all multimedia equipment including
current technology, standard office equipment, and basic Office Computer program abilities. (Word,
Excel, Power Point, Google mail, Google Suite, etc.)
