The Science Teacher is responsible for presenting science as an exciting and dynamic process, which goes beyond information, and helps to encourage curiosity and wonder. We are looking for a teacher that allows students to acquire scientific literacy through guided discovery, problem-solving, cooperative learning, and appreciation of real-world relevance. The applicant should understand the cognitive and social-emotional development of middle school children and possess the ability to communicate their passion for science with those students. We are looking for a positive, collaborative, compassionate, and innovative teacher to fulfill these duties and responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Further develops, implements, assesses, and modifies as necessary a dynamic science program for middle school grades that aligns with the Doane Stuart School mission and curriculum.
- Utilize a hands-on, inquiry-driven approach that maximizes student engagement
- Displays a deep understanding of and a passion for science and its application to the real world.
- Organizes classroom systems and procedures and manages student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged and learning.
- Assesses students' scientific knowledge for the purposes of refining classroom activities and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students' progress, expectations and goals.
- Serves as middle school advisor.
- Coaching and club advisory options are available.
- Maintains a high level of awareness regarding research and recent developments on programs that will benefit middle school students in science.
- Ability to explore and execute technology in the classroom as an instructional tool to enhance learning.
- Seeks collaboration with a dynamic and active Upper School science department.
- Provides feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students' progress, expectations and goals.
- Actively seeks opportunities for professional development in science and middle school pedagogy.
- Listens and responds to student and parent concerns in a responsible, constructive and resourceful manner.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in science.
- Master's degree in science, education, or related field preferred
- Minimum two-three years of experience teaching middle school science
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child development and educational practices.
- Effective, timely, and professional written and verbal communication skills
- Strong background in an inquiry approach to science education, including experimental design, curriculum design, interdisciplinary activities, and project-based learning
- Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment with a commitment to cultural competency.
- Strong initiative and organizational skills
- An ability to work in a joyful, collegial and collaborative environment
- A sense of humor, warm personality, and growth mindset
