Position: Development Manager

Reports To: Director of Development and Government Contracts

Compensation: $90,000-$110,000 Full-Time (1.0 FTE) exempt position. Benefits include medical, flexible spending account, and commuter benefits if work more than 20 hours a week


About the Organization:

Founded in 1983, Mission Action is a multi-issue, multi-strategy nonprofit organization, with an annual budget of $22 million, based in San Francisco's Mission District. Our mission is to nurture individual wellness and cultivate collective power among low-income and immigrant communities to create a more just society. We provide direct services to meet immediate needs, as well as affect broader change by engaging in advocacy and community organizing, working on a wide range of issues-from homelessness to housing to immigration to employment. We believe deeply that these issues are interconnected, and that solidarity and the linking of these issues is core to our work in our efforts to create a more just society.


Position Summary:

The Development Manager holds a crucial role on the development team, assuming primary responsibility for the processes associated with individual giving and corporate sponsorship. Working closely with the Director of Development and other members of the development team, as well as programmatic and administrative leadership, the Develop Manager helps identify, attract, solicit and retain a donorbase of individual and corporate donors in order to build a pipeline for ongoing unrestricted support for the organization, as well as funding in support of specific objectives on an as-needed basis. In addition to the above, the Development Manager will be an active partner in the direction of the fundraising program, with ample opportunity to help set group goals, develop strategy, establish more efficient and effective policies and procedures, and nurture a culture conducive to fundraising across the organization.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Donor Relationship Management:

  • Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors (individuals, corporations, foundations).
  • Assist in identifying major gift prospects and help develop strategies for engagement.
  • Maintain and grow a portfolio of individual and corporate prospects, taking leadership in each step of the donor continuum, from prospect identification through stewardship.

Annual Fund and Campaigns:

  • Lead the strategy, planning, and execution of the organization's annual giving campaign, ensuring goals are met and donor engagement is maximized.
  • Develop and implement segmentation strategies to target different donor levels, from first-time givers to high-level supporters.
  • Collaborate with team members to plan and execute project- or program-specific campaigns, including direct mail, digital campaigns, and special initiatives.
  • Monitor and report on campaign progress, ensuring goals are met and suggesting adjustments as needed.

Corporate Sponsorships:

  • Identify, cultivate, and secure corporate sponsorships that align with our mission and goals, treating each sponsorship like a partnership with mutual benefits.
  • Develop compelling sponsorship packages that align with the business objectives of potential corporate partners while supporting the organization's fundraising needs.
  • Build relationships with corporate partners and maintain ongoing communication to keep them engaged and informed about the impact of their support.Identify and cultivate new corporate sponsors and partners, with a focus on long-term relationships.

Database Management & Reporting:

  • Maintain donor databases, ensuring accurate records of donations, pledges, and interactions.
  • Create and generate regular reports on fundraising progress, donor trends, and overall development activity.

Collaboration and Team Support:

  • Work closely with Development team colleagues to develop materials that promote fundraising initiatives and showcase donor impact.
  • Work closely with program leadership to identify funding needs and strategic opportunities for smart growth.

General Conduct:

  • Conduct business in accordance with the Mission Action Employee Handbook, exercising sound judgment and serving the best interests of the agency and the community.
  • Work within the framework of the agency's mission, vision, values, theory of change, and organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, restorative justice, trauma-informed work, and language justice.
  • Committed to treating each community member with respect and dignity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3-5 years of fundraising experience in a nonprofit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of fundraising strategies and best practices.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with donor management systems (e.g., Bloomerang, Salesforce, Raiser's Edge).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficientcy with MS Word, Powerpoint, and other common office applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of directly relevant fundraising experience with a Master's Degree.
  • Experience with corporate sponsorship and managing an annual fund program.
  • Experience maintaining a portfolio of annual and/or major gift donors.
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Background in and passion for working with low-income and immigrant communities on issues of social justice, including housing rights, immigrant rights, and/or worker rights, with familiarity with these issues in the Mission District and San Francisco.
