Job Summary
This position, located at the Charleston Meter Shop located at the Electric Operations Building in North Charleston, South Carolina, has a direct impact on the success of the departmental mission through the proper installation of metering equipment. This employee provides an invaluable service through execution of various meter maintenance and testing programs, ensuring compliance with PSC rules and regulations. The apprentice meterman is a 4-year apprenticeship (8 steps); however, depending on experience level of the applicant, they may be eligible to start at a pay and step other than Step 1.
The Apprentice’s major responsibilities include installing transformer-rated metering equipment for commercial and industrial customers, performing vector analysis of meter installation to verify proper installation, programming electronic metering equipment to match appropriate rate and service type, troubleshooting equipment problems and communication issues and performing necessary repairs, and performing field testing of metering equipment in accordance with appropriate schedules.
Pay for this position ranges from $25.73 to $39.84 per hour based on experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
- 0-2 years of experience
- Ability to lift 70 pounds
- Ability to work in a field environment in extreme temperatures
- Ability to work with ladders
- Ability to work on energized equipment below 600 volts
- Proficiency in the use of a personal computer (PC)
- Manual dexterity to operate hand-held equipment
- Knowledge & ability to perform trigonometric computations
- Strong math skills and a strong mechanical/electrical aptitude
- Strong Inter-personal skills that will facilitate working in a group environment and communicating with customers
- Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3 plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined above.

Required- Associate’s degree from a recognized college or technical school in an electrical or computer field of study
