SUMMARY:
Direct the instrumental music program for Donna High School and manage the overall fine arts program for the Donna High School cluster. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League(UIL), and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition. Provide all fine art students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable fine art students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND/OR CERTIFICATION:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required fine arts endorsements for subject and level assigned T-TESS Certified, preferred
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Demonstrate proficiency in the instruction of instrumental music
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
Ability to interpret data
Ability to implement policy and procedures
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
EXPERIENCE:
3 years as an associate high school band director or at least five years as an assistant band director
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Planning
- Direct high school instrumental performers, such as marching band, concert band, soloists,
and ensembles.
- Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band and all other fine art programs.
- Provide for band and fine arts participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, and UIL activities.
- Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, and board policy in the band area.
- Oversee band booster club, and support band booster club activities.
- Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
8.Collaborate with fine arts director in the advocacy and recommendation of progressive policies to improve the fine art programs.
Budget and Inventory
- Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department.
- Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all (band) equipment.
Instruction
- Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of
preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board
policies, and administrative regulations.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional
development of students.
Student Management
- Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook
- Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Maintain confidentiality.
Personnel Management
- Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of all assigned fine arts personnel.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitor the performance of all fine art directors and support staff.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and responds to questions from administrators, peers, students, parents, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
