The purpose of this class is to perform routine-to-moderately complex technical accounting and clerical
work in the collection of unpaid taxes for Dorchester County and to perform related work as assigned.
This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed
regularly by supervisor.
Duties
- Greets and assists customers at the counter; answers the telephone and provides requested
- Provides a variety of information to the public regarding Delinquent Tax Collector's Office
- Calculates, collects, receipts, records and deposits tax payments, penalties, fees, fines and other
- Processes bankruptcy letters received by mail; verifies whether delinquent taxes are due.
- Checks deeds for delinquent taxes; notifies new owners of delinquent taxes owed.
- Receives add/abate letters and manually writes changes in posting book.
- Researches property ownership to ensure that owners are located and notified of property
- Locates and posts properties which are delinquent in taxes; takes pictures of properties to
- Prints delinquent property seizure and levy posters to be placed on properties.
- Keeps accurate and complete records of all certified notices received or returned and all
- Prepares folders of properties with unpaid taxes for tax sales.
- Oversees assigned part-time staff in field and in office; provides guidance and directions; and
and/or maintaining of various department documents.
- Assists in coordinating department activities and functions with those of other County
- Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance from County
collection policies and procedures.
- Performs general administrative/clerical work as required including, but not limited, to typing
retrieving computer data, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, processing mail,
etc.
- Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
- Attends training, seminars, meetings, etc., as required to maintain job knowledge and skills.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by education in accounting, bookkeeping, data processing or
a closely related field.
Requires at least three (3) years of related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
