What are the responsibilities and job description for the DELINQUENT TAX CLERK position at Dorchester County?
The purpose of this class is to perform routine-to-moderately complex technical accounting and clerical work in the collection of unpaid taxes for Dorchester County and to perform related work as assigned. This class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed regularly by supervisor.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Greets and assists customers at the counter; answers the telephone and provides requested information or forwards calls to appropriate staff person.
• Provides a variety of information to the public regarding Delinquent Tax Collector’s Office procedures, policies and methods.
• Types all deeds issued by Delinquent Tax Office as a result of the delinquent tax sale.
• Calculates, collects, receipts, tax payments, penalties, fees, fines and other monies.
• Processes bankruptcy letters received by mail; verifies whether delinquent taxes are due.
• Receives add/abate letters.
• Researches property ownership to ensure that owners are located and notified of property postings/seizures as prescribed by law.
• Keeps accurate and complete records of all certified notices received or returned and all properties posted.
• Prepares folders of properties with unpaid taxes for tax sales.
• Oversees assigned part-time staff; provides guidance and directions; and checks work for accuracy; leads the preparation, processing, copying, indexing, filing, transmitting and/or maintaining of various department documents.
• Assists in coordinating department activities and functions with those of other County departments, divisions, municipalities and outside agencies as appropriate.
• Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance from County personnel, attorneys, mortgage companies, property owners and others regarding delinquent tax collection policies and procedures.
• Performs general administrative/clerical work as required including, but not limited, to typing reports and correspondence, completing forms, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, processing mail, etc.
• Attends training, seminars, meetings, etc., as required to maintain job knowledge and skills.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED supplemented by education in accounting, bookkeeping, data processing or a closely related field.
Requires at least three (3) years of related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
