JOB TITLE: Seasonal Parks Maintenance
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
JOB LOCATION: Douglas County Public Works
HOURS: Summer seasonal. Daytime hours, typically, no nights or weekends!
SALARY: $18.84 hourly.
BENEFITS: ESST (Accrue Earned Sick and Safe Time).
Generally, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

JOB OBJECTIVES:
Perform a variety of duties in the parks division of the Public Works Department. The majority of the time will be to assist with the operation of groundskeeping (mowing and trimming of lawns). At times may involve maintenance of equipment, tasks associated with the park and playground safety control program, construction and repair of park facilities, and service to the public park user.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties listed are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Perform building custodial and grounds maintenance using approved methods, materials, and equipment.

Custodial:
  • Empty garbage containers, clean restrooms, etc.
  • Grounds Maintenance:
    • Mow and trim lawns, control weeds; plant, care for, and remove large and small trees, ornamental shrubs, lawns, etc.
    • Construct park facilities using various skills, approved methods, materials, and equipment.
    • Assemble picnic tables, signs, playground equipment, park buildings, etc. Wood framing and finishing, concrete forming and finishing, landscape materials placement, etc.
    • Perform occasional weekend park attendant service, as assigned.
    • Perform routine motor vehicle, small engine, and mechanical equipment service.
  • Perform all work in compliance with Douglas County Safety Program, including the AWAIR policy and applicable OSHA standards.
  • Complies with all rules and policies in order to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Reliable, predictable attendance and punctuality.
  • Other duties, as assigned or apparent.

Access to Not Public Data
The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13.

If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee's work assignment no longer requires access.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
Possess a valid Minnesota Driver's License.

  • Knowledge of applicable traffic laws and regulations.

  • Must be punctual and present on all scheduled days.

PREFERRED/DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent completed on or around start date preferred.

Experience
Previous experience with the tasks performed and equipment used. Previous experience working alone or with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated interest in surveying, parks, highway maintenance, or engineering fields through education, volunteer work, and/or hobbies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Perform work in shop type areas and in the outdoors, with a variety of summer weather conditions. Some exposure to body fluids, cleaning chemicals, dirt/dust, and gasoline/oil. Exposure to various mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment.

HOURS
Generally, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
May work varying hours or an occasional weekend based on weather and parks needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS can involve, but are not limited to:

  • Sit for extended periods in/on vehicle/equipment.
  • Stand for extended periods, outside on variable/uneven surfaces.

  • Bends/squats/stoops/kneels while working as low as ground level.
  • Climbs things such as stairs and ladders, on/off equipment.

  • Use hands, fingers, and arms to safely operate vehicles and equipment, loading/unloading, and routine maintenance tasks. Operation of foot and hand controls.
Seeing and Reading:
  • See, read, and understand the English language in written information, instructions, and safety warnings in all forms, including handwritten and hard copy.
  • Must see near, far, depth, field of vision, and color.
  • Ability to write.
Mental acuity and alertness:
  • Think and apply basic judgment, discretion, and initiative in accomplishing work.
  • Ability to do simple arithmetic.
