Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) seeks an energetic, responsive, and skilled manager to oversee all facilities at DESK’s Drop-in & Resource Center and Donation Processing Center at 260-266 State Street in New Haven, as well as at our administrative offices at 151 East Street. As a member of our leadership team, the appropriate candidate person will need to be committed to DESK’s mission and values of inclusivity and empathy, have a strong record in supervising and management, and maintain high standards when it comes to attention to detail and cleanliness.
Mission & Background Information
DESK serves people experiencing homelessness or living in poverty by providing food assistance and services that promote health, community, and equity. Our newly-renovated Drop-in & Resource Center serves as a place for those experiencing unsheltered homelessness to access basic needs and medical care. Core Responsibilities
- Facilities, Equipment, and Vehicle Maintenance – Both regular and occasional maintenance to ensure that all aspects of our owned and leased properties (including mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical), furniture and equipment, and vehicle(s), are operating properly at all times; must be capable of reading, interpreting, and following all specifications for facilities finishings, furnishings, and equipment as they pertain to regular maintenance. For food service equipment, works closely with the Food Services Manager; for IT equipment, works closely with the Data Administrator; responsible for ensuring that vehicle inspections and registrations are kept up to date.
- Project Oversight – Oversees occasional facilities projects, involving vendor/contractor oversight, bidding process,work orders, reporting, and closeouts.
- Vendor/Contractor Coordination and Oversight – Coordinates and oversees all specialized work with contractors, subject to approval by the Executive Director. As the primary point of contact, must be onsite to provide access to contractors, and follow up to ensure that the work was completed properly. Vendor coordination includes utilities, fire monitoring, pest control, waste management, and others. Interfaces with local authorities for any inspections or facilities-related matters.
- Light Repairs – Undertakes light repairs on any aspect of agency property or equipment.
- Custodial – Works with staff (and occasionally volunteers) to ensure that all facilities are kept clean, safe, and well-stocked on a daily basis and with a very high level of scrutiny and attention to detail; must be capable of reading, interpreting, and following all specifications for facilities furnishings as they pertain to regular cleaning and custodial work.
Must-haves
- 4 years of related, paid work experience in facilities and maintenance
- 2 years of staff management experience and familiarity with budget processes
- Valid driver's license
- Past or current certification in health and safety guidelines/procedures
- Fluent in basic arithmetic and work in multiple unit systems
- Must be physically able to perform tasks such as stooping, bending, lifting,
kneeling, crouching, and climbing; must be able to lift 50 pounds. Within the
guidelines, reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals
with physical limitations.

Compensation: Starting annual salary will be $50,655 - $57,493 (plus medical and life insurance) based on experience.
