What are the responsibilities and job description for the Campus Police Officer I position at DPH-Shattuck Hospital?

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking dedicated candidates for five Campus Police Officer positions (CPO-I). Campus Police Officers provide protection and security at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Campus for its buildings, grounds, equipment, patients, students, visitors, and staff.


Please Note: There are 5 full-time positions available, 40 hours weekly on various shifts.


Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Addresses concerns in a timely manner related to possible loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism, civil disorder, violence, or other causes.
  • Patrols campus buildings, parking lots and adjacent areas; enforces the Hospital’s parking, smoking, and other policies, and the Hospital’s traffic and safety regulations.
  • Provides assistance during emergencies to DPH, DMH, and vendor programs on campus.
  • Performs various duties required at fixed posts with a focus on customer service; monitors access control systems; maintains incident and daily logs; and related other duties as required.
  • When needed, the CPO administers emergency first aid as a designated first responder; also provides emergency coverage for other departments through assignments to various areas such as Transportation, the Mail Room, Operators, and snow removal teams.
  • May investigate incidents that occur on campus and, when needed, assist courts or grand juries in the prosecution of cases. If a Campus Police has designated Special State Police Officer (SSPO) status, duties may include detaining or arresting suspects, when necessary.


Required Qualifications:

  • Able to deal tactfully with others, and to interact with people who are under emotional or physical stress.
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in a dangerous or emergency situation.
  • Capacity to gather information through interviewing and examining documents.
  • Potential to exercise sound judgement.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in criminal justice or related field.
  • Knowledge of standard police procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to think analytically.
  • Previous security experience.


Working Conditions: This position requires the transport of heavy objects, and standing and walking for prolonged periods of time, with or without an accommodation.


About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements: None.

Special Requirements: Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.

Appointee must be eligible for appointment as a special police officer under Chapter 22C, Section 60 (DPH) and Section 59 (DMH & DMR) of the Massachusetts General Laws.
