Job Description

The Principal reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools. The Principal evaluates and supervises both professional and support staff. The Principal plans, organizes, and implements curricular and administrative functions for the school to provide support for the educational services with the resources available. These functions may include: District curriculum/program leadership and school-wide programming relative to assessment, curriculum development, special education, instructional practices, staff development, parent communication, scheduling, main office management, school discipline and safety, student transportation and facilities oversight. The goal is to provide clear leadership to all staff in the school to ensure all students learn, while staff work collaboratively to accomplish this.

 

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:

  1. Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration, Management or related field required.
  2. Licensure as administrator/supervisor or eligible for licensure by start date required. 
  3. Prior experience as a building Principal or senior administrator.
  4. Knowledge of current Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
  5. Deep understanding of evidence-based practices for teaching in Grades Prek-6.
  6. Knowledge of best practices for assessing student progress toward achievement of standards.
  7. Knowledge of child development and best practices for supporting the social and emotional development of elementary school students.
  8. Knowledge of culturally responsive classroom practices and a firm belief in celebrating diversity while improving equity and inclusion.
  9. A minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience.
  10. Experience as a coach or mentor is preferred.
  11. Proven success as a professional development provider and curriculum developer.
  12. Excellent communication skills.
  13. Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) and fingerprint check.

Performance Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning Leadership

  • Motivate and engage students, parents, and teachers to maximize opportunities for all students to reach their full potential.
  • Assist in preparing and delivering professional development, as well as staff and curriculum meetings.
  • Be a member and facilitator of various district-wide committees, teams, and working groups as needed.
  • Know how to use a range of effective strategies, analyze instruction, and provide clear, specific information on strategy implementation.
  • Lead the analysis of school-wide curriculum, instruction, and assessment strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in all content areas and teaching effectiveness.  Lead in school improvement planning activities.

 

Student Support Leadership

  • Provide leadership to the building's administrative team and grade/team leaders, using a distributive leadership model.
  • Identify student educational needs through the systematic quantitative and qualitative analysis of data to develop and implement a Tiered System of Supports with services as appropriate and resources available.
  • Analyze related data and work with classroom teachers on implementation of instructional strategies and practices consistent with that data to result in improved student performance.
  • Provide oversight and support for implementation of IEPs and 504s, as well as supporting EL students by attending meetings as needed and supporting students, staff and families of students with specific needs.
  • Lead and motivate staff to view student success through a lens of equity and actively demonstrate culturally-responsive practices, celebrating the diversity of students and families.
  • Coordinate the enforcement of student discipline policies and monitor all safety and security concerns, including student infractions on the bus.
  • Lead and coordinate a tiered system to supporting the behavioral, social, and emotional needs for all students.
  • Lead and coordinate the school tiered assessment and data team.

 

Communication

  • Support and promote two-way communication with families, building a trusting and collaborative relationship.
  • Communicate important information to key stakeholders and act as a liaison among parents and community members. 

 

Building Management

  • Lead the organizing and facilitating of test administration of local, state, and national assessments as directed.
  • Coordinate the administration of school attendance policies and staff time sheets.
  • Manage and prepare the school schedule, staff duty assignments, and the preparation of monthly and annual school activities calendars.
  • Coordinate the general upkeep and condition of the facility.
  • Manage the school budget and provide oversight of all personnel managing school funds through the coordination of the district business office.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by the Director of Student Services, Assistant Superintendent, or Superintendent of Schools. 

 

Supervision and evaluation 

  • Evaluate, coach, and supervise professional and support staff consistent with the terms of the collective bargaining agreements and/or District policy, while also directing other building administrators to do the same.
  • Provide feedback during coaching on teaching effectiveness and fidelity to guidance as provided by the teacher's guide, including concrete suggestions for improvements, especially related to strategies for working with struggling students, English language learners, and others with special needs within the regular classroom.
  • Create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration among staff to promote professional growth and accelerate the achievement of all students.

  7. Provide instructional leadership to school personnel in effective uses of best practices and resources to improve teaching and learning.
  8. Collaborate with teachers to effectively integrate best practices into curriculum, instruction. and assessment practices.
  9. Ensure those programs and technology used support Pentucket’s curriculum goals.
