Suspension of Drexel University's Contribution into 403(b) Retirement Plan

As communicated on Oct. 10, Drexel University is suspending its contributions to employee retirement plans for calendar year 2025 as part of its multi-year plan to build financial resilience. Drexel is continuing to monitor the situation and will share updates as they become available for calendar year 2026.

Job Summary

The Radiation Safety Technician is responsible for conducting radiation safety surveys and audits of research laboratories and clinical facilities where sources of ionizing radiation are used and supporting the radiation monitoring program. Duties may be assigned at Drexel University, Drexel University College of Medicine, Wills Eye Institute, St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, Eastern Regional Medical Center, and/or other affiliated organizations.

Essential Functions

  • Distribute and collect radiation monitoring devices to/from departments, and ship dosimeters and controls.
  • Add and delete individuals from monitoring service using computerized system.
  • Review dosimetry reports for high and unusual exposures and investigate the cause of these exposures.
  • Maintain inventory of radiation producing machines and radiation detection equipment.
  • Conduct physical inventory of sealed sources and leak test sealed sources as required by regulations.
  • Survey academic and clinical facilities using radioactive materials for radiation levels and contamination.
  • Audit nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and research laboratories for regulatory compliance.
  • Review requests to purchase radioactive material for proper authorization.
  • Inspect/survey radioactive packages upon receipt and distribute packages to appropriate laboratories.
  • Monitor radioactive material releases in effluent, perform bioassays.
  • Collect radioactive waste from generators, store and prepare waste for disposal, remove decayed waste.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Prepare written reports and maintain records in established recordkeeping system.
  • Conduct in-service training for hospital and university faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree in physics, biology, chemistry, or other science or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
    • Seven years' experience at an academic/medical facility may substitute for the degree requirement.
    • Certification in nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, or radiography technology will be considered in substitution for the degree requirement.
    • Minimum of 1 year of experience at an academic/medical facility may substitute for the degree requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable in the use of a variety of radiation detection equipment that includes handheld survey meters and analytical equipment.
  • Possess or quickly develop a working knowledge of radiation protection regulations, standards and practices at academic/medical facilities.
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers and must be capable of accurate data entry.
  • Able to effectively communicate with persons of various backgrounds is necessary; therefore, good written and oral skills are required.
  • Able to work independently with general direction and minimal supervision.

This position is classified as Exempt, grade J. Compensation for this grade ranges from $47,490 to $71,230 per year.
