JOB DESCRIPTION
The Chief Operations Officer (COO) holds the highest strategic leadership position within the Cooperative for directing and controlling the construction, operation, and maintenance of the electric distribution system and must do so in a manner that ensures the Cooperative delivers reliable electric service of the highest quality. The COO is responsible for developing and implementing the long-term vision and strategy for the Operations Division and working to foster a collaborative work environment throughout the Cooperative. As a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the COO oversees all Operations functions, including Right-of-Way, System Operations, Warehouse, System Construction and Maintenance and aligning them with the Cooperative’s long-term vision and strategic priorities. The COO collaborates with other executives to ensure adherence to the Cooperative’s mission and strategy and that success and innovation are achieved throughout the Cooperative.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Supervisory Responsibility — Manchester District Director, Shelbyville District Director, Lewisburg District Director, Decherd District Director, and Columbia District Director.
Budget Responsibility — The divisional budget involves seven-figure annual amounts.
The Successful Chief Operations Officer will:
- Provide oversight of all Operations activities and ensure that Operations is professionally managed to enable a well-functioning, efficient Division.
- Facilitate a responsible, motivated, innovative, and collaborative environment within Operations, which provides support to all other Divisions of the Cooperative to meet over-all Cooperative strategies.
- Ensure the development and management of the annual budget and allocation of resources for Operations in a manner that meets the financial goals of the Cooperative.
- Develop the long-term strategy for the Operations Division to prepare the Cooperative for future challenges and opportunities to provide reliable and competitive electric service.
- Provide inspirational leadership and direction; ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization via mentoring, coaching, and training; and promotes a culture that reflects the Cooperative’s values, encourages high performance, and rewards productivity.
- Keep the President & CEO apprised of strategy and implementation, major projects and issues, contracts, budgets, and other matters.
- Maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of RUS statutory requirements and related guidelines.
- Ensure continual improvement in all aspects of member engagement.
- Engage with other cooperative leaders and utility organizations to foster innovative ideas and solutions to issues within electric utilities.
- Represent the Cooperative in industry and community affairs, serving as a spokesperson to advance cooperative values, foster positive relationships, and enhance the Cooperative’s reputation within the community.
- Emergency response coverage, as needed.
- Perform other duties and projects as directed by the President & CEO, maintaining flexibility to support the Cooperative’s evolving needs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education — High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
Experience — Fifteen (15) years of experience in Operations or related field with a focus on the electric utility or energy sector; a minimum of five (5) years in a leadership role.
Certification/License, etc. - Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Tennessee Driver’s License. Must be eligible and remain insured as a driver by the Cooperative’s group liability policy for the automotive fleet.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities — Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills are required. The ability to effectively represent the Cooperative to a wide variety of internal and external contacts is required. The ability to prioritize, delegate, and meet deadlines is required.
