In addition to its hospitals, Duke Health has an extensive, geographically dispersed network of outpatient facilities that include primary care offices, urgent care centers, multi-specialty clinics and outpatient surgery centers.

Hyperbaric Chamber Specialist

This position requires you to be on call - one week 24/7 on call out of every four weeks.

Job Description

  • Perform specialized technical duties at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology to ensure safe and efficient operation of hyperbaric/hypobaric chambers, associated physical support systems and equipment.
  • Operate hyperbaric/hypobaric chambers, associated equipment and systems by monitoring communications, pressure controls, compressed gas sources, data collection, atmosphere conditioning, breathing gas, fire safety and other systems to ensure safety and efficacy.
  • Perform hyperbaric/hypobaric chamber clinical and research procedures using varied pressures and atmospheric gas compositions.
  • Operate and ensure maintenance of high-pressure gas compressors and associated gas delivery, storage and control systems; repair and overhaul gas valves and regulators and modify pressure hull penetrations; operate high pressure gas mixing station and install and modify specialty gas piping ensuring compliance with oxygen and breathing gas system standards.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on hyperbaric/hypobaric chambers such as but not limited to corrosion removal, cleaning, painting, and testing; perform calibration of associated instruments; conduct functional inspections and preventative chamber maintenance to ensure safe and efficient operation; replace parts such as filters, chemical absorbents and lubricants on predetermined maintenance schedule; report potential hazards to appropriate authority and prepare and maintain related records.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of materials, supplies and equipment. Provide technical assistance to research personnel and laboratory staff for the operation and maintenance of the chambers and associated equipment. Instruct personnel on the procedures required to safely conduct clinical and research chamber operations including accompaniment of personnel on chamber dives and flights. Clearance physical required for exposure to altered pressure.

Preferred Requirements

Education: Associate of Science degree in Underwater Technology or Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering field.

Experience: Required - five years hyperbaric/hypobaric chamber operations, maintenance and repairs; Preferred – two years machinery maintenance and/or machining operations.Certification: Preferred – CHT, EMT, SCUBA.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Associate's in science, engineering, or related field and 3 years of hyperbaric experience

OR

2 years of military or commercial training and 3 years of hyperbaric experience

OR

5 years of experience in hyperbaric
