North Carolina LiteracyCorps at Latino Educational Achievement Partnership (LEAP) in Durham, NC - must be bilingual in both Spanish and English.
Seeking 1 Half Time AmeriCorps Members
23-25 hours a week - achieve 900 total hours by August 31, 2025
Organization Mission and Overview: Latino Educational Achievement Partnership empowers Durham Children to achieve academic success by providing a high-quality, culturally affirming, dual-language preschool and on-going support through 8th Grade.
Member Impact: Members will increase LEAP’s capacity by improving volunteer recruitment, developing new partnerships and improving coordination and efficiency of event planning. The NC Literacy Corps member will support our existing programs by adding capacity through the following activities:
Expected impact at this location includes:
- Recruit 15 additional tutoring volunteers
- Hold 2 new community events/programs
- Develop partnerships with two organizations who we have either never worked with or not worked with in the past 2 yrs.
Member Service Position Summary:
Service activities vary across programs but all will fall under the allowable activities outlined below. Your site has identified the following categories as ones the member at this site will participate in.
(1) Strengthening volunteer management and recruitment, including:
(i) Enlisting, training, or coordinating volunteers;
(ii) Helping an organization develop an effective volunteer management system;
(iii) Organizing service days and other events in the community to increase citizen engagement;
(iv) Promoting retention of volunteers by planning recognition events or providing ongoing support and follow-up to ensure that volunteers have a high-quality experience;
(v)Assisting an organization in reaching out to individuals and communities of different backgrounds when encouraging volunteering to ensure that a breadth of experiences and expertise is represented in service activities
(2) Conducting outreach and securing resources in support of service activities that meet specific needs in the community. For our purposes, outreach means communication strategy - social media, newsletters (other than volunteer newsletters) and resources is defined as pre-approved revenue or in-kind resource generation.
● Helping to secure in-kind resources with local businesses to support tutoring and caregiver engagement
● Helping to research funding opportunities to support the specific program the member supports
(3) Helping build the infrastructure of the sponsoring organization, including:
(i) Conducting research, mapping community assets, or gathering other information that will strengthen the sponsoring organization's ability to meet community needs;
(ii) Developing new programs or services in a sponsoring organization seeking to expand;
(iii) Developing organizational systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness;
(iv) Automating organizational operations to improve efficiency and effectiveness;
(vi) Supporting staff and board education
(4) Developing collaborative relationships with other organizations working to achieve similar goals in the community, such as:
(i) Community organizations, including faith-based organizations;
(ii) Foundations;
(iii) Local government agencies;
(iv) Institutions of higher education; and
(v) Local education agencies or organizations
(5) DIRECT SERVICE ACTIVITIES may include:
● Tutoring K-12 students supervised by teachers and literacy experts
● Tutoring adults
● Reading to children
● Outreach to children at community sites alongside local agency partners
● Administering student assessments including state mandated pre- and post-tests and program evaluation requirements
● Conducting basic computer lessons or classes as needed
● Collecting and distributing books
● Assisting with existing social media campaigns
● Completing data entry as required to document services
● Tabling to provide agency information or materials or sharing resources in the community
Essential Functions: All basic duties that must be performed WITH or WITHOUT a reasonable accommodation.
● Recruit, train, and supervise volunteer for LEAP’s tutoring program
● Attend all tutoring sessions to provide support to volunteers, students and families
● Support student and family engagement by providing regular communication and outreach
● Host 2 community classes or events to support family engagement
● Support the creation of efficient systems for tracking volunteer and student data
● Develop and maintain relationships with community partners to support the mission of the program
Marginal Functions (secondary job responsibilities) of the position. The Marginal Functions are those activities that are seldom or intermittently performed by the member and/or are additional duties that are preferred:
● Support the overall mission and growth of the program by supporting communication, attending/tabling at events, and securing in-kind resources.
● Conduct student evaluations
● Tutor students in reading and math
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Required:
● Citizenship or permanent residency status (Green card) required
● 17 years old or older required
● High School or GED equivalent required; College degree preferred
● Background checks: National Sex Offender check, state criminal check, FBI check required
● Proficient in both written and spoken Spanish - must be able to communicate effectively with monolingual Spanish speaking community by phone and in person without the use of technology aids like Google translate.
Preferred:
● Experience supporting parents of school age children
● Experience tutoring or teaching
● Experience recruiting and retaining volunteers
● Experience working with the Latinx community.
Commitment Required: Members are expected to serve through August 31, 2025. Halftime members 23-25 hours per week throughout the service year.
Benefits: Half time (HT) members receive $1454.54 monthly while in service. Members receive Disaster Preparedness training and Mental Health First Aid certifications and ongoing professional development. Segal Education awards of $3697.50 are available to HT members (respectively) who satisfactorily complete the required 900 service hours. The monthly living allowance is only paid while a member is in service.
