Position Summary

Perform Heavy Mobile Equipment Operator Functions (operate Bulldozer, Front End Loaders, Excavator, and Water Truck when necessary).

Location: Monroe, MI

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Occasional overtime may be required as job duties demand.

Job Essential Functions:

The responsibilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Direct incoming loaded gravel train trucks (ash & soils) where to dump loads at the quarry dump site areas, based on changing conditions. Changing conditions include wind speeds to prevent fugitive dust, dirt road and dump site dry vs. wet, ice and snow, and to maintain dumping areas bench profile. Sweep out coal.
  • Groom Dirt Roads by applying gravel to cover pot holes or eroded areas, and plow to remove Snow with Front End Loaders from all mine roads, landfill perimeter, and quarry areas (~5 miles of roads).
  • Remove any accumulated fallen rock and large ice chunks (seasonally) off quarry switch back roads with Front End Loaders to maintain a pathway into and out of the 300 ft deep quarry. Shovel as needed
  • Operate Front End Loaders to dump Power Plant Generated Coal Combustible Residuals (CCR's)/Coal Ash and other inert soils into a 300 ft deep mining benched area. Receive and follow directions
  • Perform basic mechanical work to maintain quarry equipment (nuts & bolts expertise). Keep work area clean and presentable
  • Clean water discharge ponds and canals from vegetation growth with Excavators, when directed, without breaching the pond's clay bottom liners to prevent leaking (NPDES environmental ruling).
  • Operate the Excavator to clean/dig hardened, or set up ash from open top gravel train trucks without damaging the trucks bed liners.
  • Maintain/replace pond aerators (install & remove) for environmental reasons.
  • When necessary (>35° F) operate the Water Truck to water down dirt roads and wash paved roadway surfaces to prevent track out onto Fort Street, and to prevent fugitive dust emissions.
  • Operate pumps and valves for quarry dewatering and to minimize fugitive dust emissions. This includes operating mobile heavy equipment and pick up trucks to navigate switch back roads down to the quarry bottom (~300 ft below surface grade).
  • Seasonally install, operate, relocate, and remove portable Rainbirds (water spraying equipment/Impact Sprinklers) and water hose supply lines to keep fugitive dust emission at a minimum.
  • Seasonally drain quarry fugitive dust water header supply lines to prevent freezing.
  • Maintain vegetation free property fence line along the Sibley Quarry perimeter (operate chain saws, excavator brush cutter, hand saws & brush trimmers when directed).
  • Perform daily checks for security breaches along the fence line for the Sibley Quarry perimeter.
  • Substitute as the Quarry Supervisory role within the office to take phone calls and watch the main vehicle entrance gate to prevent unauthorized people from entering the site when the DTE supervisor is requested to travel to the Trenton Channel Power Plant to perform Fuel Supply duties and attend meetings (varies from day-to-day).
  • Perform janitorial work (sweep floors and dispose of trash) in the office building and two (2) garages as needed.
  • Perform other work for safety and environmental support as directed by the Sibley Quarry supervisor, i.e. salt parking lot and paved roads, and assist to obtain water samples for analysis.
  • Perform other general work when changing/unforeseen conditions dictate the need to maintain the quarry's operation, as directed by the Sibley Quarry supervisor.
  • Alert Leader, Supervisor, or Site manager of any safety concerns or unusual conditions

Other Job Responsibilities to Perform As Requested

  • Provide landscape duties including spraying for weed control around storage tanks as requested.
  • Perform light bulb change outs and sharpening of tools as requested
  • Fill and transport City Water from the back site garage water supply source using the Water Truck to fill the office water supply tank for the main office restroom.
  • Maintains availability, to work outside the normal working hours (OT paid) when requested/phone called by the Sibley Quarry supervisor to assist in keeping quarry equipment functional.

License / Certifications:

None necessary but any are a positive

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds.
  • Require the ability to lift, bend, twist, stand, walk, push, and pull
  • Exposure to elements including cold, hot, loud, getting wet, and getting dirty

Additional Responsibilities:
Attend Job Related Trainings as required.

Performs other similar or related duties as necessary.

Travel - No travel is expected for this position.
