Position Description
The Assistant Coach of the Dundee Dolphins Swim Team works under the direction of the Head Coach and Aquatic Manager. The Assistant Coach will be responsible for safe and responsible coaching of the Dundee Dolphins Swim Team, developing swimmers, and day-to-day planning. The Assistant Coach will also attend all swim meets that the Dolphins compete in as designated by the head coach. Work is performed in accordance with a prescribed program and established procedures with opportunity for the exercise of independent judgment. The position of Assistant Coach is an “at will” position.
Essential Responsibilities
- Gain knowledge and understanding of Park District policies and procedures and see that they are adhered to at all times.
- Responsible for successful swim team program. This involves effective supervision of all swim team staff, scheduling makeup days and swim meets, overseeing entire daily operation, and communication with swimmers/parents.
- Able to teach and develop strokes, techniques, starts, turns, etc. for all levels.
- Develop Team Spirit and Pride, creating an all-around athlete including fairness, equality and proper etiquette for all swimmers (and families).
- Suggest plans for current and long-term improvements.
- Help oversee pool area while on duty.
- Ensure for safety of all swimmers. Assist and support Lifeguards with any needed emergency or situation. Must always utilize required Personal Protective Equipment. Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures. Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct assistant coaches on safety procedures.
- Keep records for all incidents/accidents or other pertinent matters.
- Schedule regular meeting times with participants and staff.
- Act in a sure and responsible way in all aspects to the job.
- Responsible for opening and closing facility if needed.
- Assist in and insure a clean, safe and orderly facility at all times.
- Must retain flexibility regarding hours of work.
- Train & supervise all staff performance duties and submit periodical evaluations of all staff.
Communication & Customer Service
- Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationship with coworkers and to promote and maintain high morale and enthusiasm.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Communicates matters of importance in a timely manner.

Safety & Risk Management
- Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
- Reports any work-related injuries to supervisor promptly.
- Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.
- Treats public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Is courteous in all cases.
- Pays strict attention to housekeeping of work area(s) and general facility.
Qualifications
Have experience and knowledge with a Swim team, current ISI\USA swimming certifications and able to train staff in coaching techniques. The ability of proficient recordkeeping for inventory and cash reports. Effective verbal communication on the telephone and in person with a high degree of accuracy and diplomacy, which includes a calm disposition in tense situations. The ability to handle more than one thing at a time.
Requires a valid and maintained Illinois driver's license, classification "D".
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required.
- Knowledge and skills in technology, or the ability to learn.
- Possess good problem solving skills and has capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergencies.
- Ability to work a varied schedule including some nights and weekends as required.
- Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to swim 200 yards.
- Ability to retrieve a 10 lb. brick from the bottom of 12ft.
- Tread water for 2 minutes.
Hours Standards
- Hours vary - range from 9:00am through 10:00pm Sunday through Saturday.
- Weekend or holiday hours may be required as well as extended hours as needed.
Salary : $16 - $17
