POSITION SUMMARY :
Performs daily husbandrycare of all animals, primarily rodents, housed in the the Animal Care Facility,including maintenance and care of the facility and equipment, in compliancewith all federal, state, and university regulations regarding the care and useof animals in research and teaching. The Animal Care Technician reports to theManager of Animal Facilities.
DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES :
Performs daily routinehusbandry care, including animal health and welfare assessments, and provisionof food, water, enrichment, and clean caging.
Administers basicveterinary medical treatments under supervision as needed.
Daily operation offacility equipment, including a cage washer, autoclave, and bottle washer.
Sanitizes all animalhousing rooms, procedure rooms, cagewash areas, and facility equipment.
Maintains accurateanimal husbandry records and documentation of facility operations.
Performs all duties inaccordance with facility policies and standard operating procedures.
Performs related jobduties as assigned.
Weekend and holidaywork is required.
Completes otherduties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS :
Minimum qualifications :
High schooldiploma or GED is required.
Preferredqualifications :
Associate's degreeor Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in veterinary technology,animal science, biology, or other related field is preferred.
One to twoyears' experience working with rodents in a laboratory or research setting ispreferred, but not required.
Completionof the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) Certification is preferredwithin one year of hire.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination ofexperience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilitiesrequired to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is notlimited to, the following :
Ability toappropriately handle and restrain rodents.
Basic knowledge ofrodent husbandry and health conditions.
Basic computerknowledge and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Strong written andverbal communication skills, and strong organizational skills.
Strong attention todetail and able to consistently work accurately and with quality.
Strong decision-makingskills, and able to work independently.
Ability to workeffectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
Ability to lift atleast 50 pounds, move equipment, and bend or squat to knee-level.
Ability to stand forextended periods of time.
