The Assistant Director/ Career Consultant provides guidance and coaching to undergraduate, graduate students and alumni relevant to their search for career, internship, and professional opportunities. The Career Consultant serves as a liaison to select academic and administrative departments collaborating with faculty and staff to provide career-related programs, activities, presentations and resources to meet students’ career development needs. This position conducts outreach and communication to students to increase student participation and engagement in career-related services and programs. The Career Consultant assists with outreach to employers in industries related to liaison assignments to increase participation in recruiting activities at Duquesne. The position requires a high-level of interaction with staff, students, and employers, which requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Counsels undergraduate, graduate students and alumni relevant to their selection of a career and all aspects of the job-search process for assigned academic and administrative departments. Administers and interprets relevant career assessments.
Serves as a liaison to assigned academic and administrative departments maintaining relationships, communications, providing resources and coordinating relevant career-related programs and events for faculty, staff and students. Represent the Career Center as requested at events and programs sponsored by liaison departments.
Coordinates career and job-search programs and events for students and alumni.
Plans and coordinates outreach and communication to students and alumni generally and in assigned liaison areas specifically to increase participation in career-related services and programs.
Develops and conducts presentations for classes and student organizations on career-related and job-search topics.
Contributes career-related content to a variety of the department’s communication channels and publications including career guides, career tips series, newsletters, emails, social media channels and the department reports.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with potential and current employers and supports recruiting activities of the department.
Assists with the organization and execution of on-campus and consortia career fairs and networking events.
Utilizes the career management system, Handshake, to maintain employer and student activity records, manage career and employer events, and coordinate communications to employers and students utilizing the handshake system.
Serves as the chairperson of a Career Development functional area team, leading the coordination and supporting the implementation of the department’s administrative functions in assigned areas such as marketing and communication, career education and programs, or career information and resources; Serves as a member and supports the initiatives of other department teams and committees as assigned.
Participates in orientation and training for the department’s interns and student workers. Identifies projects and assignments for interns and student workers coordinating with the department’s intern supervisors.
This position requires travel.
Performs other duties and projects as assigned by the Director of Career Development.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, communication, psychology, education, social sciences or related field from an accredited institution and 1-3 years of work- related experience.
Current valid PA Driver’s license in good standing.
Preferred qualifications:
Master’s degree in business, human resources, counseling or higher education administration from an accredited institution.
3 - 5 years of progressively responsible and relevant work experience is preferred. Prior experience in career development/services in a higher education setting is preferred.
Career Assessment Certifications (Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI) within a year preferred.
Career-related or Counseling Certifications (LPC, NCC, Career Coaching certification) preferred.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint; ability and willingness to learn and develop new computer skills and other information technology applications as needed.
Thorough knowledge of student development and career development theory including career assessment instruments, and counseling/ coaching techniques.
General understanding of job-market and industry trends in a wide-variety of career fields including Business, Liberal Arts, Sciences, Health Care, Education and Music. Thorough understanding of job-market and industry trends in career fields related to majors in assigned academic schools.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively demonstrating initiative in setting and reaching goals.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; strong English grammar skills.
Strong public speaking skills and ability to plan and deliver effective presentations on career-related topics.
Strong organizational and attention to detail skills.
Strong customer-service orientation and professional demeanor
Ability to plan and implement events and programs according to established timelines and deadlines
Ability to be flexible and to handle multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously
Strong interpersonal communication skills needed to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community and external clients
Ability to prepare reports and to maintain complex records and data
Ability to handle confidential or sensitive information appropriately and exercise professional judgment
Ability to work varied hours including evenings and weekends when needed
