POSITIONSUMMARY :
The Assistant Director / CareerConsultant provides guidance and coaching to undergraduate, graduate studentsand alumni relevant to their search for career, internship, and professionalopportunities. The Career Consultantserves as a liaison to select academic and administrative departmentscollaborating with faculty and staff to provide career-related programs,activities, presentations and resources to meet students' career developmentneeds. This position conducts outreach and communication to students toincrease student participation and engagement in career-related services andprograms. The Career Consultant assists with outreach to employers inindustries related to liaison assignments to increase participation inrecruiting activities at Duquesne. Theposition requires a high-level of interaction with staff, students, andemployers, which requires the exercise of considerable initiative andindependent judgement.
DUTIESAND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Counsels undergraduate, graduate students and alumnirelevant to their selection of a career and all aspects of the job-searchprocess for assigned academic and administrative departments. Administers andinterprets relevant career assessments.
Serves as a liaison toassigned academic and administrative departments maintaining relationships,communications, providing resources and coordinating relevant career-relatedprograms and events for faculty, staff and students. Represent the CareerCenter as requested at events and programs sponsored by liaison departments.
Coordinatescareer and job-search programs and events for students and alumni.
Plans andcoordinates outreach and communication to students and alumni generally and inassigned liaison areas specifically to increase participation in career-relatedservices and programs.
Develops and conducts presentations for classes andstudent organizations on career-related and job-search topics.
Contributes career-related content to a variety of the department'scommunication channels and publications including career guides, career tipsseries, newsletters, emails, social media channels and the department reports.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationshipswith potential and current employers and supports recruiting activities of thedepartment.
Assists with the organization and execution of on-campusand consortia career fairs and networking events.
Utilizes the career management system, Handshake, tomaintain employer and student activity records, manage career and employerevents, and coordinate communications to employers and students utilizing thehandshake system.
Serves as thechairperson of a Career Development functional area team, leading thecoordination and supporting the implementation of the department'sadministrative functions in assigned areas such as marketing and communication,career education and programs, or career information and resources; Serves as amember and supports the initiatives of other department teams and committees asassigned.
Participates in orientation and training for the department's interns andstudent workers. Identifies projects and assignments for interns and studentworkers coordinating with the department's intern supervisors.
This position requires travel.
Performsother duties and projects as assigned by the Director of Career Development.
REQUIREMENTS :
Minimum qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in business, human resources, communication, psychology,education, social sciences or related field from an accredited institution and 1-3years of work- related experience.
Current valid PADriver's license in good standing.
Preferred qualifications :
Master's degree in business, human resources, counseling or highereducation administration from an accredited institution.
3 - 5 years of progressively responsible and relevantwork experience is preferred. Priorexperience in career development / services in a higher education setting ispreferred.
Career Assessment Certifications (Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI) within a year preferred.
Career-related or Counseling Certifications (LPC, NCC, Career Coaching certification) preferred.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination ofexperience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilitiesrequired to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is notlimited to, the following :
Knowledge of University policies andprocedures.
Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Officesoftware including Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint; abilityand willingness to learn and develop new computer skills and other informationtechnology applications as needed.
Thorough knowledge of studentdevelopment and career development theory including career assessmentinstruments, and counseling / coaching techniques.
General understanding of job-market andindustry trends in a wide-variety of career fields including Business, LiberalArts, Sciences, Health Care, Education and Music. Thorough understanding ofjob-market and industry trends in career fields related to majors in assignedacademic schools.
Ability to work independently andcollaboratively demonstrating initiative in setting and reaching goals.
Ability to communicate effectively, bothorally and in writing; strong English grammar skills.
Strong public speaking skills andability to plan and deliver effective presentations on career-related topics.
Strong organizational and attention todetail skills.
