What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fleet Mechanic position at DURANGO FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT?
JOB SUMMARY
Maintain and repair a variety of emergency response vehicles, light trucks, passenger cars and other fleet vehicles. Our fleet includes Class 6 type trucks (fire engines, tankers and ladders) diesel ambulances and a variety of other support vehicles. This position also performs maintenance at 18 locations including plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum high school diploma or GED.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Two (2) years of increasingly responsible documented experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
- Education or training which ensures the ability to read and write in detail, full scope of diagnosis, repair and recommended solutions.
- Specialized training in the full mechanical repair of vehicles and automotive equipment, including experience in diesel, hydraulic and computer electronics repair.
- Must possess a complete set of hand tools, American and Metric.
- Must be willing to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications related to fire apparatus repair and maintenance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Follows the Mission, Values and Department expectations.
2. Designs, fabricates and installs specialty devices for emergency response and fleet vehicles.
3. Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures utilizing computer and analog diagnostic equipment; determines problems and causes; recommends solutions. Diagnostic requirements include but are not limited to computer aided hydraulic, pneumatic, ABS and traction control, drive train chassis and brakes.
4. Performs a variety of minor and major vehicle and equipment repair, chassis and suspension repair, air conditioning repair and electrical repair activities. This will also involve pneumatic systems, electronic controlled engines, gasoline, and diesel engines, electronic controlled transmissions, and both hydraulic and pneumatic anti-lock brake and traction control systems.
5. Performs maintenance and repairs on all District buildings.
6. Performs arc and gas welding, and fabrication services; performs maintenance in specialized equipment including small vehicles and heavy equipment.
7. Operates shop machinery, including presses, grinders and blasters.
8. Adheres to safety precautions.
9. Communicates professionally and effectively with shop management, peers, other department supervisors and staff.
OTHER DUTIES
· Assists in the general maintenance and cleaning of the shop.
· Seasonal activities – plowing/shoveling snow, tractor work, lawn/sprinkler maintenance.
· Performs any other duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of:
· Principles and practices of inspection, troubleshooting and repair of internal combustion and diesel engines.
· Automotive and construction maintenance equipment.
- Electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Shop tools and equipment used in repairs.
· Arc and oxyacetylene welding and cutting techniques.
- Computer diagnostics for vehicles and equipment operation.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
· Traffic laws and ordinances.

· Operating equipment and tools used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.

Ability to:
· Operate a variety of automotive and equipment repair tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
· Troubleshoot and diagnose problems and causes in automotive, diesel construction and related systems.
· Diagnose mechanical problems of vehicle, and heavy and light maintenance equipment.
· Repair electronic components and air conditioning systems.
· Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contracted in the course of work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 150 pounds.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit.
· Must comply with the organization’s wellness and fitness program, this includes walking a mile for time, and participate in the annual Cooper Fitness Assessment.
This position is an hourly non-exempt position working a 40 hour, Monday-Friday schedule.
