Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Director/Instructor, in the Massage Therapy
Department. The Director/Instructor works closely with the Dean of the Business and Entrepreneurship (B&E) pathway. The director is responsible for the planning, implementation, direction, supervision, and evaluation of Massage Therapy instruction.

The Massage Therapy Director/Instructor will be responsible for teaching the theory and practice of massage therapy including different modalities of massage therapy.

The Director/Instructor is responsible for maintaining student records, conducting inventory, ordering supplies, maintaining databases and completing reports that must be submitted to the NC Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy. Teaching delivery method may be online and/or in person.

This position requires a commitment to a “team philosophy” and an understanding of the importance of maintaining a professional and effective department; including, but not limited to the following duties and responsibilities.

Examples of Duties

  • Collaborate with employers to assess training needs related to the industry’s goals and develop training programs for future employees.
  • Keep the Dean of B&E informed of program activities and maintain close working relationships with all other appropriate staff, faculty, students, local industry, and agencies.
  • Actively assess programs to determine effectiveness and relevance in the industry.
  • Supervise the Massage Therapy faculty. Provide the training needed and monitor the progress and growth of the program.
  • Meet all requirements for national, state, and federal certifications including the:
    • North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy
  • Maintain communications throughout the Massage Therapy program by a system of regular meetings with part-time staff and adjunct faculty and by means of written communications, utilization of committees, conferences, and other group management strategies.
  • Participate in ongoing B&E directors meetings and chair at scheduled times.
  • Recommend new program initiatives to the Dean and oversee the development of approved new programs and courses.
  • Create, implement and execute new continuing education programs/classes. Direct and manage existing continuing education programs/classes.
  • Work with the Dean to develop and implement strategies to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the Massage Therapy program.
  • Recruit, interview and hire qualified part-time instructors that meet the credential requirements to teach the course subject matter and, when applicable, the licensing agency. Provide them with an effective orientation and in-service training.
  • Monitor and verify class rosters at the designated timeframe as specified by the college.
  • Develop each semester schedule in a timely manner.
  • Interview prospective students for the Massage Therapy program. Monitor and maintain student records.
  • Order textbooks and other materials needed for the program.
  • Monitor the maintenance of course outlines, course syllabi, and program evaluations, and providing the appropriate feedback to the instructors.
  • Visit classes regularly to observe, evaluate and support instruction as well as maintain and process class visitation reports.
  • Participates in and contributes to the affairs of the B&E meta-major and the college including attendance at regular staff meetings, special meetings, and other planned activities, including off-campus events at which the meta-major and college should be represented.
  • Represent the college and the B&E meta-major in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  • Provide effective management of program budgets and work closely with the Dean and the college business office to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Build relationships with community business partners/agencies to identify sources of donations, and trainings to meet the needs of the businesses.
  • Maintain strong relationships with the Cosmetic Arts and Massage Therapy Advising Committee members.
  • Must complete all mandatory work related and professional development training.
  • Additional duties shall include other appropriate activities as assigned by the Dean of the B&E meta-major.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in education administration or equivalent.
  • A valid North Carolina Massage Therapist license with the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy
Work Experience:
  • Five years’ experience in training and supervising instructors teaching in a community college setting or equivalent is required.

  • Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication skills as well as evidence of computer literacy.
  • Proven ability to maintain accurate records, collect and manage data, and other essential administrative skill.
  • Initiative to develop and maintain professional contacts within Durham Tech and throughout the community.
  • Working knowledge of the communities of Durham and Orange counties.
  • Personal qualities and work style to indicate compatibility with a team approach.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills, and effective oral and written communication/public relation skills;
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills;
  • Ability to manage and multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to think creatively and put ideas into action; ability to make presentations to large audiences;
  • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office including Excel and Word;
  • Personal integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain confidentiality; and
  • Understanding of the mission, goals, and objectives of a community college.

Normal Working Hours:
The considered normal working hours for this position will work 8:00 a.m.– 5:00 p.m., Monday–Friday at 40 hours per week, which includes a 1-hour lunch break. The teaching aspect of this job could vary from day hours and/or evening hours. This position may be asked to work during special events and the hours for any particular day are subject to be changed. Occasional weekend and evening duty may be required.
