Description

Summary

Coordinates all laboratory activities involved in production at the facility. Provide training on HACCP, GMP’s, Allergens, and any other issues relative to Food Safety and Food Defense.  Responsible for “new employee” quality orientation training. Help conduct plant audits, develop SOP’s and SSOP’s. Monitors weight control and quality improvement process activities. Responsible for overseeing the Nonconforming Hold Procedure.  Aid in the investigation of all customer complaints as well in the completion of all CAPA documentation.  Supervises the quality team (lab technicians and floor technicians).  Responsible for timekeeping procedures for the quality group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities                                                                                        

  • Select, orient, motivate, and retain staff capable of meeting current and projected needs for QA; help make recommendations and/or decisions on various personnel matters such as performance reviews, disciplinary action, and terminations for QA personnel.   
  • Perform yearly training on several issues, including HACCP, GMP’s, Food Security, Allergens, and other topics as they arise in quality and food safety.                                  
  • Conduct monthly plant audits           
  • Monitor SOP’s & SSOP’s and sanitation.                                                                                         
  • Monitor daily QA documentation                                                                                                     
  • Determine status of questionable product and what is required to correct a formula or how it can be reworked.
  • Place product on Hold and determine final disposition
  • Maintain the upkeep of the Hold Log Daily  
  • Update Hold inventory List weekly                                      
  • Monitor for HACCP, GMP’s, Food Safety and Food Defense                                
  • Aid in overseeing quality improvement processes                                                                            
  • Facilitate teams for safety/ process improvement.
  • Monitor and proof all labels and film used
  • Involved in determining and resolving concerns that customer and/or sales might have.  Initiating CAPA’s when required.
  • Interprets and implements departmental goals, objectives, and policies to ensure delivery of quality product
  • Regular attendance on the job, dependability and reliability are required

  • Follows established company policies and procedures                                             
  • Work with fellow employees in a cordial and cooperative manner                          
  • Participate in the plant safety program                                                                      
  • Handle SQF maintenance and audits and hold a SQF practitioner status
  • Responsible to validate the entire SQF program on an annual basis.                                               
  • Monitor, develop and train individuals on label verification procedures      
  • Perform mock recalls and traceability exercises                                                                    
  • Aid in managing the Environmental Monitoring Program per corporate policies and customer requirements        
  • Involvement with R&D and customers at bringing new products to market and trouble shoot existing products. 
  • Maintain and develop QA procedures                                                                       
  • Develop and adhere to a department budget
  • Promote safety, assist with accident investigation                                         

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises 7 to 10 employees in the Quality Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Formal education in courses related to science, mathematics, statistics, and industrial practices are essential.
  • Associate degree in food related program required, or equivalent work experience.
  • HACCP certification required.
  • PCQI and SQF Practitioner certification preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of FDA regulations.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to use logical or scientific thinking to solve problems
  • Ability to provide effective written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to effectively monitor, direct, and develop subordinates.
  • Ability to perform medium physical work, exerting up to 20 lbs of force on an occasional basis, and up to 10 lbs of force frequently to move objects, performing such activities as stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, climbing balancing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling,and talking.
  • Computer literacy

Working Conditions

  • Work in normal manufacturing environment with potential exposure to equipment movement hazards and dangerous chemicals/solvents if proper safety procedures are not followed.

Education and/or Experience

Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. HACCP certification required.  PCQI and SQF Practitioner certification preferred.
