Material Handler/Extension Lift Operator

Job Summary:

The Material Handler and extension lift/telehandler operator is responsible for safely and efficiently performing a variety of duties in order to support the production operation in regards to our outside inventory and material management. This position does require an experienced extension lift/telehandler operator. The Material Handler position is also expected to participate in clean up duties to ensure work can be completed in a safe manner.

Essential Responsibilities

• Unload steel and other deliveries for both facilities on the property
• Maintain and assist in the organization of both plants’ yards
• Ability to operate straight mast and extendable lifts
• Work with both plants to ensure parts and materials are delivered as instructed
• Visually inspects tools and equipment for safety and proper operation at the beginning of each shift. Notifies supervisor or maintenance of needed repairs or replacements
• Ability to safely move materials either manually, with a forklift, or by using an overhead crane to position heavy materials
• Maintain and use all required personal protective equipment as outlined in the Diamond Z Safety Manual
• Understands and follows all Diamond Z safety policies and procedures
• Perform other tasks as assigned or needed

Additional Responsibilities

• Cleans and organizes work area
• Appropriately disposes of scrap material and waste
• Assists with special projects as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

• Must have at least 3 years of extension lift/telehandler operator experience
• Applicants with previous steel knowledge and/or experience working in a steel yard are preferred
• Ability to reach over and around objects to lift, move, or place objects or materials in designated locations
• Ability to understand written or verbal instructions, operate a tape measure, and understand the difference between various types of steel
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently
• Ability to occasionally lift objects weighing over 50 pounds with assistance
• Ability to see to read drawings and instructions, and place materials where needed
• Ability to safely work on raised platforms, climb stairs or ladders, and climb off equipment or ladders
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time
• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, and reach both above and below shoulder height
• Ability to handle, place, manipulate, operate, stack, and connect equipment and materials through fine and basic hand skills
• Ability to verbally communicate with coworkers and supervisors in a safe and productive manner
• Ability to accurately and effectively manage their time throughout the day to maximize productivity during a shift
• Ability to work extended shifts to meet business demands as needed
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen

Working Conditions

• Temperature and humidity variances consistent with normal outdoor ranges. Climate control in the facilities is limited. This position requires employees to work outdoors
• Air contaminates such as smoke and dust may be present but are below the recognized TLV
• The presence of electrical and compressed air sources
• The presence of bottled gas and oxygen
• The presence of chemicals
• The presence of moving equipment, lift trucks, or other vehicles
• May be subject to cramped working conditions in some cases
• Exposure to flying particles, hot or molten metal
• Exposure to light radiation from welding or plasma cutting
• Exposure to sharp edges and points on steel and abrasive tools
• Exposure to falling or rolling steel
