Position Title: Assistant Plant Manager
Position summary:
Assists the Plant Manager with managing and coordinating employees engaged in railcar (tank, hopper, and other freight cars) repair, cleaning, and coating/paint activities to ensure optimum efficiency and financial welfare of operations. Will be responsible for ensuring that management and employees are in compliance with meeting safety, quality and company service goals.
Tasks:
- Ensures railcar maintenance (repair, cleaning, coating/paint) activities meet AAR requirements, safety and quality standards, customer demands, and production targets.
- Reviews and assesses the plant operation, workload, scheduled car flow and back log hours and ensures that location assets (e.g., people, processes, materials, measures, equipment, and conditions) are in place to meet efficiencies, productivity, and company goals.
- Reviews railcar status with managers, supervisors, and department heads and assists with the development of action plans and steps on moving railcars through the plant meeting safety, quality, and production goals.
- Resolves any potential breakdowns, delays, and/or bottlenecks involving railcar cycle times and operations.
- Provides oversight / supervision to managers and supervisors responsible for railcar repair, cleaning, paint, inspection, customer service, quality assurance and other office support functions.
- Defines and communicates the responsibilities, authorities, expectations, and accountabilities to direct reports and other personnel.
- Enforces plant targets and goals regarding staffing, training, safety, quality, equipment, tools, materials, production and other key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Working with the Plant Manager, reviews plant operating reports, performance metrics, and other KPIs daily and / or weekly and assists in establishing action plans or adjustments to address / correct any deficiencies. Reviews daily reports to monitor railcar maintenance service efficiencies, utilization, through-put and cycle times to achieve operational goals.
- Evaluates performance of supervision, providing regular feedback and coaching on objectives, performance, and improvements needed.
- Establishes strong relationships with customers and resolves customer inquiries and problems.
Education and Certifications:
- High School Diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Bachelors’ Degree in Business, Management, Engineering, or similar field, a plus.
Experience:
- 5 years of progressive management experience in a large industrial production or manufacturing facility.
- Management / Supervisory experience in a railcar (tank, hopper and other freight cars) maintenance or manufacturing facility, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to manage large diverse teams to ensure work processes and operations meet or exceed all requirements and business goals.
- Ability to inspect, identify, and verify that plant operations and processes are implemented, performed, and completed in compliance to Industry, Company, and Customer requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret accounting reports (financial statements, P&L reports) to determine areas needing cost reduction or improved profitability.
- Ability to effectively manage time and multiple projects within a fast pace environment.
- Ability to build solid relationship with customers addressing their needs and meeting or exceeding expectations.
- Ability to communicate ideas / information in writing and through speech so that others will understand.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications with the ability to learn proprietary database systems.
- Industry knowledge of AAR and FRA rules, and Tank Car Maintenance Regulations; Knowledge of current regulatory requirements (e.g., AAR MSRP, M-1002, Section C, Part III, HM201); Knowledge of FRA regulations, preferred.
- Knowledge of general safety practices and standards within a heavy industrial environment. Ability to understand and follow all safety rules, wear PPE required for job, and focus on preventing safety incidents
- General knowledge of railcar repair, cleaning, valve, and coating / painting procedures / processes, preferred.
- Work Environment / Conditions:Candidate must be able to perform the following physical tasks:
- Working around heavy moving equipment
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Work in high places and confined areas
- Climb, squat, bend, twist, and regularly lift up to 50 pounds or more to accomplish work tasks
- Use of respirator as required
