Earlham College is seeking a Director of Student Engagement to join our team!

 

 

Summary: 

 

The Director of Student Engagement is primarily responsible for the support and oversight of a robust student leadership program, coordination of organizational advising, and student activities in collaboration with the Director of Student Activities. The Director will give particular attention and leadership with a particular focus on welcoming and belonging within the division and in student programming. The Director is expected to be an active contributor to overall goals, strategies, and responsibilities of the Division of Student Life. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life: Wellbeing and Engagement.

At all times, the Director models respect for student concerns, respectful engagement with College constituencies, and supports the College mission. Utilizing exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, the Director establishes collaborative relationships within the division, as well as a variety of campus resources beyond Student Life.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Within the Division of Student Life, this position will create, develop, and provide oversight of student leadership initiatives. Specifically:

  • Support a student leadership curriculum, programs, and concepts for the campus community in a manner that supports Earlham’s academic mission and goals.
  • Actively participate and engage in relevant student affairs professional associations.
  • Manage, track and oversee multiple large budgets, ranging from student fees, campus programming, and student organization budgets with the Director of Student Activities.
  • Audit, review and update risk management policies and training for student government and organizations in coordination with the Department of Public Safety; advise Student Life colleagues as appropriate.
  • Train and serve as the faculty advisor for Earlham Student Government.
  • Serve as the co-advisor for 50 student clubs and organizations ranging from service, cultural, political, religious, and special interest.
  • Develop and coordinate biannual training for student leaders and faculty advisors.
  • Assist the Director of Student Activities with on-site support and supervision of events.
  • Work collaboratively with other divisions of the College (such as the Center for Global and Career Education and the Center for Social Justice) to expand civic and community service opportunities locally and nationally, such as alternative service breaks.
  • Work collaboratively with Outdoor Education, Residence Life, and other offices across campus to create and sponsor Earlham Excursions.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for crisis or critical incident response.
  • Serve on the Campus Life Advisory Committee.
  • Engage with appropriate regional and/or national professional development organizations.

Qualifications


  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, or a related field is preferred.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in student engagement, student leadership, student programming, and/or orientation is strongly desired.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating a commitment to fostering an environment of welcoming and belonging.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to student development theory and the evolving needs of college students.
  • Experience in crisis management, including BIT (Behavioral Intervention Team)/Care team processes.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and management.
  • Ability to design, implement, and assess training and programming curricula.
  • Understanding of the liberal arts mission and a commitment to an educational model that fosters critical thinking and holistic student development.
  • Successful experience in program coordination and student organization advising at the collegiate level.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in an organized manner.
  • Previous experience in diversity education and training, with a willingness to collaborate on co-curricular leadership and inclusion initiatives for students.
  • Proficiency with technology, social media, and budget management.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Proven experience and expertise in coordinating and implementing initiatives and educational programs that foster welcoming and belonging.
  • Direct experience advising student government and managing student leadership programs and organizations within a college or university setting.
  • Strong theoretical foundation in leadership development principles and practices, with experience applying models such as the Social Change Model preferred.
  • Experience with a values-centered advising approach and collaboration with teaching faculty on a highly diverse campus; international experience is a plus.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and active engagement in campus service and professional organizations within student affairs and higher education.
  • Familiarity with principles of consensus-building, sustainability, and fostering a culture of global concern.
