Triage Nurse
Overview of role
The triage nurse must have a broad knowledge base of general nursing practice and knowledge of acute practice based on skill level. Has good history taking skills; able to do a quick accurate assessment; perform accurate and complete documentation; have strong computer skills; and good organization skills. The triage nurse must be able to relate and communicate well with patients face to face and on the telephone, also with providers and staff. Demonstrates self-direction in establishing priorities and working with little supervision, must maintain a high level of precision in judgment, accuracy of assessment, and skill in problem solving under stress.
Responsibilities
- Able to determine provider schedules and availability daily.
- Works with providers, nurses, and patients to resolve questions concerning medications, health education, medical advice and test results within skill level and scope of practice.
- Able to assess the urgency of patient problems, and thereafter schedule the appropriate appointment, as needed.
- Records and maintains complete and accurate records of patient communications in the medical record.
- Retrieves phone calls/telephone encounters in a timely manner and responds to patient needs according to medial priority. Documents all incoming calls in telephone encounters.
- Submits electronically/faxed prescriptions and refills prescriptions according to physician orders. Records all prescriptions, refill information in the medical record.
- Assist physicians and staff in other ways as assigned such as working up patients and making referrals as needed when available.
- Maintains patient confidentiality, including staff and providers who are patients, in discussing pertinent information that may be needed by fellow staff member.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $34.25 - $42.45 per hour
