Job Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Job Summary:
The Medical Assistant is a vital role to the pain clinic. The Assistant will utilize both clinical and administrative tasks to help clinicians in the pain clinic. Daily responsibilities include checking-in patients, in addition to various administrative tasks such as conducting prior authorizations and documenting medical information into the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
Clinical Duties
- Verifies patient information by interviewing patient; recording medical history; confirming purpose of visit.
- Obtains full set of vital signs to include: BP, pulse, weight, height, pain scale
- Prepares patients for examination by provider and assist provider as needed
- Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens as needed such as, urine drug screens (UDS) and oral swabs
- Collaborate with other clinical staff to review UDS reports for inconsistencies and report to provider
- Preparing and administering medications as directed by providers- which may include IM injections
- Prescription refills, checking CSR, medication prior authorizations, sending refills to provider for escribing and instructing patients about medications
- Pill disposal
- Removing sutures, spinal cord stimulator (SCS) trial lead removal and changing dressings
- Referrals and authorizations for PT
- Obtain authorizations for MRI and CT imaging, scheduling imaging and calling patient with scheduling information and any pre-procedure prep
- Explaining pre-procedure and post procedure instructions to patients
- Keep exam rooms stocked, cleaned and organized
- Assist other team members as needed when time available
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Conduct themselves in a professional and pleasant manner at all times and in all interactions with patients, staff, vendors and any others during their activities as a representative of the organization.
Administrative Duties (may include, but not limited to):
- Answering telephones
- Greeting patients
- Updating patient electronic medical records
- Scheduling appointments
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma.
- Minimum of 1-year medical assisting experience.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Proficiency with EMRs.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with staff, physicians, and external customers.
- Strong ability to multitask and move from one project to another as needed.
- Works to resolve problems or determines an appropriate course of action in a timely manner.
- Strong time management, follow-through, and organizational skills.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
- Work performed in an office environment.
- Involves frequent contact with physicians, leadership, and medical office staff.
- Physical activity can be irregular and fast-paced, regularly.
