Education Specialist - Foundational Sciences

The Brody School of Medicine Department of Academic Affairs is seeking to hire an Education Specialist for Foundational Sciences for its Office of Student Success and Wellness. This will be a Full-time, 12-Month, At Will position.

Duties of the position will include –

Academic Counseling & Advising – 60%

  • Conduct needs assessments to identify and respond to student learning concerns.
  • Meet individually with students in foundational sciences courses and graduate students to provide evidence-based learning assessments, consultation, coaching, and development of academic success strategies.
  • Work with students to develop, implement, and monitor individual learning plans and to support the development of learning skills, critical thinking skills, time management and organizational strategy, exam preparation skills, and other skills needed for academic success.
  • Provide support to students preparing for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 Licensure Examination and other high-stakes examinations in the foundational sciences.
  • Support student learning needs related to disability accommodations.
  • Assist in tracking, monitoring, and providing academic support to students engaged in off-cycle curricular plans, customized schedules, or Leave of Absences (LOA).
  • Exercise discretion when working with students as well as in handling of confidential information responsibly and in compliance with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act).
  • Maintain notes of student meetings in order to monitor student progress and outcomes.


Outreach – 20%
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate workshops and independent learning modules to help students enhance effective learning techniques based on learning theory and evidence-based strategies.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives to support the objectives of the Office of Student Success and Wellness and Academic Affairs related to supporting student academic success and development. This may include providing presentations or consultations to faculty, staff and units on student learning or academic support concerns.
  • Providing referrals to other Academic Affairs units or campus/external offices as appropriate.

Other duties – 20%
  • Collaborate with team members to collect data, evaluate services, and make recommendations for academic program improvements.
  • Collaborate with Peer Tutoring team members to assist in identifying, training, and supervising of Peer Tutors.
  • Support and attend student functions as appropriate (e.g., OSSaW or Academic Affairs workshops and panel discussions, orientation, Peer Tutor Team meetings).
  • Serve as a resource to the Office of Medical Education, Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development, M1/M2 Curriculum Committee, M1 Review & Promotion Committee and other committees or units as assigned.
  • Attend BSOM departmental and division meetings or events as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree required in Education, Psychology or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in an academic role in higher education.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Areas of preferred study: education, educational psychology, educational counseling, or related fields.
  • Experience conducting educational workshops, seminars, and groups, or classroom teaching.
  • Experience working with graduate students or students in professional school.
  • Experience with tutoring and/or peer assisted learning programs, research, educational assessment, and/or learning skills development.
  • Experience in online student support.
  • Experience handling a busy caseload and spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advanced planning and the ability to work at a fast pace.
  • Experience working in large, highly structured environments.
  • Collaborative skills and a commitment to teamwork with students, faculty/staff, and team members.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication skills, public speaking and leading group discussions.
  • Familiar with standardized examinations that apply to graduate students and medical students.
  • Problem-solving skills and strong self-initiative.
  • Computer proficiency with word processing, databases in a Windows and/or Mac environment, and learning support technology.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate to others complex policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy, productivity, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
  • Ability to effectively address complex and sensitive learning concerns.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, producing high quality and professional work products in a rapid pace environment.
