Key Roles
This position is responsible for providing effective leadership, vision, strategic and tactical direction, and maintaining overall authority and accountability for the daily operation and maintenance of East Kentucky Power's generation facilities. This position ensures an organization of qualified personnel, while maintaining safe, reliable, environmentally compliant, and cost-efficient production of electrical energy.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the operation and maintenance, and for the safe, reliable, economic performance of coal-fired electric generating plants, environmental control systems, natural gas-fired combustion turbine plants, Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine station, solar farms, and landfill gas plants.
- Ensures operational excellence by effectively managing capital and human resources, continuous improvement, goal setting, communications, and ensuring strategic initiatives and business plans align with corporate strategic plan.
- Ensures adherence to all applicable safety codes and regulations, and corporate safety standards and programs.
- Actively participates in EKPC’s Central Safety Committee.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable NERC and SERC standards.
- Oversees the preparation of the annual operating and maintenance budget for Power Production.
- Tracks and controls the generating stations budgets, performance, and implements corrective actions.
- Guides the development of a long-term maintenance forecast for generating stations.
- Participate in the strategic development and prioritization of the major project plan for Power Production.
- Prepares and presents reports for EVP/COO, President/CEO, and EKPC Board of Directors as requested.
- Prepares and provides testimony for the Public Service Commission on IRP, rate cases, Environmental Surcharge, FAC, and new generation applications, as needed.
- Coaches, mentors, guides, and provides development opportunities for staff to optimize current performance and prepare individuals for future succession and leadership opportunities.
- Stays abreast of new technologies for the existing generation fleet and for future generation production.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Key Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- P.E. preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of ten (10) years of related management experience.
- Must have at least seven (7) years of coal and/or natural gas plant operations or directly related management experience.
- Power plant construction experience preferred.
- Prior cooperative generation and transmission (G&T) company experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of the electric utility industry and application of not-for-profit, cooperative principals.
- Thorough knowledge and experience with a fossil-fired electric generating station, FGD system, and waste water treatment.
- Thorough knowledge and experience with combustion turbine generating technology.
- Thorough working knowledge of RICE technology.
- Thorough working knowledge of solar generation and land management practices.
- Thorough working knowledge and experience with landfill gas generating stations.
- Thorough working knowledge of the PJM market or similar RTO operating experience.
- Thorough working knowledge of the National Boiler and Electrical Safety Codes.
- Demonstrates thorough knowledge of safety requirements and commitment to employee safety.
- Working knowledge and commitment to environmental compliance.
- Ability to make difficult decisions and confidently provide recommendations under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with other contacts, both inside and outside the cooperative.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and foster teamwork and trust in interactions with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Strong leadership skills with proven ability to manage, develop, and motivate staff.
- Excellent listening, written, and oral communication skills required, with effective public speaking and presentation skills at executive and Board level.

Working Conditions
