Location: East and Midtown Phillips, Minneapolis, MN
Employment Type: Part-time Contractor (10 hours per month, with potential to increase)
The Urban Agriculture Coordinator will oversee and manage the collaborative efforts of multiple urban farms and community gardens in the Phillips neighborhood. The position aims to foster food sovereignty, build community connections, and enhance the infrastructure and sustainability of local agriculture initiatives. The Coordinator will work closely with EPIC staff, farm and garden representatives, and local community organizations to plan, implement, and evaluate projects that promote sustainable urban agriculture and community development.
The gardens/farms represented in this work include:
- East Phillips 17th Avenue Garden
- Four Sisters
- EPNI
- Banyan Community Garden
- Potential of adding additional gardens
Responsibilities:
- Program Management:
- Coordinate and oversee resource sharing, educational events, and infrastructure projects across four community gardens/farms.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration between the participating urban farms and gardens.
- Lead meetings with farm and garden representatives to assess needs, plan timelines, and organize collective projects.
Community Engagement & Education:
- Organize and execute community-focused urban agriculture educational events such as farm-to-farm event and seedling giveaway (2-3 per year)
- Develop and implement strategies to increase community participation in urban agriculture initiatives, especially focusing on engaging diverse and underrepresented communities.
- Work with youth-focused community organizations to provide educational opportunities around food sovereignty and agriculture.
Resource Allocation & Infrastructure Development:
- Coordinate the distribution of shared resources such as compost, seeds, and tools.
- Oversee the development and maintenance of essential garden infrastructure, including raised beds, water systems, and soil health initiatives.
- Communicate with contractors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and services.
General Requirements and Qualification:
- Education: Background in agriculture, community development, environmental studies, or related fields preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in urban agriculture, community organizing, or project management. Experience working with diverse communities is essential.
Skills:
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects and work with various stakeholders.
- Experience in event planning and community outreach.
- Knowledge of sustainable farming practices, food sovereignty, and environmental justice.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish or Somali) are a plus.
Personal Attributes: Passionate about community-driven food sovereignty, equity, and environmental stewardship. Self-motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively.
Ideally:
- Connection to the East Phillips and/or Midtown Phillips neighborhoods
- Have your own computer and phone.
Compensation:
- $31/hour, approximately 300 hours annually, with potential for expanded responsibilities as the project grows. This position is grant-funded through July 2027, though the position will hopefully be extended past that time frame.
