Job Summary:
The Accounting Analyst is responsible for administering accounting and control procedures to ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and state and federal regulations, preparation and distribution of monthly general ledger reports and financial statements, preparation of various tax forms, managing financial compliance for grants, assisting with the annual audit and special projects as assigned by the Controller.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Reviews, audits, and prepares reports on varied accounts, including tracing errors and resolving discrepancies; interprets and applies instructions and guidelines to specific situations.
- Maintain accounting controls by following accounting policies; maintain financial security by following internal controls.
- Review and approve monthly general ledger and bank account reconciliations for special condition accounts to ensure procedural consistency and compliance. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Assist with internal and external audits to ensure compliance and operational efficiency/accuracy.
- Monitor daily cash account activity, prepare bank reconciliations, research and resolve account discrepancies and perform account receivable functions.
- Work with program staff and grant director(s) to develop appropriate budgets during the grant proposal phase and ensure that the budgets are compatible with EMU’s accounting system, with appropriate indirect cost rates.
- Manage and categorize grant expenses and perform regular grant financial reports through various grant management platforms.
- Oversee compliance with grant financial requirements.
- Complete monthly journal entries, and internal and bank account reconciliations.
- Calculate and remit monthly local and state sales taxes.
- Cross-train to serve as backup for accounts payable and controller.
- Initiate wire transfers and ACH payments.
- Serve as the primary finance contact for intercultural trips through the University, and reconcile trip expenses.
- Manage work-study students.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of accounting principles.
- Ability to comprehend complex information in order to manage financials operations.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal direct supervision.
- Attention to detail and the ability to complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to set goals, prioritize and organize job tasks and workload in order to meet deadlines, ability to complete work in a timely manner and communicate progress routinely with Controller.
- Interpersonal skills for working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administration.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a wide variety of constituents.
- Ability to use a PC and mainframe, a modem and software, Windows, Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook), downloading computerized information, invoices, and other types of correspondence.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business or related field preferred, with least three years of accounting and finance experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise Student Employees
