POSITION SUMMARY
Work closely with the Safety Manager and Safety Leadman and provide support in all safety related functions. Work with and support other departments and crafts as needed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers, the essential duties and responsibilities may be different than described.
- Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
- Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
- Assist in the inspection of facilities to detect existing or potential accidents and health
hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Assist in enforcing the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safety equipment.
- Assist the Safety Manager in planning and implementing programs to train managers and employees in work site safety practices and fire prevention.
- Issue and monitor hot work permits, confined space entries, and lockout/tag out permits.
- Administer first aid as needed.
- Conduct Safety Orientation.
- Manage the Fire Brigade Team.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May indirectly supervise and/or train subordinates assigned to the Safety Dept. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area
and overnight travel may be required.
REQUIREMENTS
Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalence plus two or more years safety experience in a manufacturing or construction environment desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Previous supervision experience is preferred. Knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and OSHA regulations desired. Completion of First Aid, CPR, Confined Space training desired.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid driver’s license required.
Skills: Basic to intermediate level Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook Express. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, general business periodicals, professional documents, Company policies/procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from senior management, employees, government officials, and the public. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstand extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, continual loud noise, and other hazards found in a heavy industrial shipyard environment. Rigorous compliance with safety procedures, policies, and personal safety equipment requirements is therefore mandatory.
