Under the general supervision of the Administrative Services Commander, or a designee, Cadets are responsible for performing a variety of tasks while assisting the Field, Administrative, and Corrections Division’s. Cadets do not fill the role of a fully sworn Deputy or Corrections Deputy, and the tasks Cadets are assigned will be non-enforcement, and non-emergency related. Candidates for this position will be selected by, and at the discretion of, the Sheriff or his designee. 

Work Schedule: Varies. (Under 29 hours per week)

1. The primary function of the Cadet position is to aid Sheriff’s Office employees by performing
duties which are aimed to assist the Field, Administrative, and Corrections Divisions.
2. As assigned, responsible for gathering information from members of the public who arrive in
need of assistance, at the Sheriff’s Office in Charlotte, or Delta Twp. This information is then
turned over to the appropriate Deputy by the Cadet, in order for the matter to be
investigated/resolved.
3. Answers non-emergency phone calls and either assists or routes all incoming calls in a courteous
and professional manner, under the supervision of the shift supervisor.
4. May respond to general questions or requests for information over the phone, or in person,
while under the supervision of the shift supervisor.
5. Assist with data entry tasks (non-report related) as requested by a Deputy Sheriff, Correction’s
Deputy, or supervisor.
6. Communicates effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding
to radio communications.
7. Observes/shadows Deputies and Corrections Deputies as they carry out their duties, at the
discretion of a supervisor, in order to further their knowledge and experience.
8. Reports departmental property and equipment requiring maintenance or repair to a
commanding officer.

Other Functions:
1. Performs other non-enforcement related duties as directed by a higher authority.

This list may not be inclusive of the total scope of job functions to be performed. Duties and
responsibilities may be added, deleted or modified at any time.
Must be a high school graduate, minimum of 17 years old, and currently enrolled in college
courses on at least a part-time basis; If not enrolled in college courses, must be transitioning to a mutually agreed upon police academy program, and have received a passing score on the MCOLES Reading/Writing and Physical Agility examinations. When transitioning to a police
academy and not currently enrolled in college courses, hiring conditions must be mutually agreed upon by the Sheriff and the Cadet candidate.

Although not required, preference is given to students who are in a Criminal Justice related degree program/course work.
  • Be at least 17 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must possess high character fitness, including but not limited to: No prior felony convictions, or criminal/civil history, which would prevent licensing by MCOLES.
  • Must meet minimum licensing standard(s) for MI law enforcement standards, as set forth by MCOLES.
  • Comply with hearing and vision standards required by MCOLES for licensing as a law enforcement officer.
