Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services, the Literacy Consultant assists the District and its Local Education Agencies (LEA’s) to ensure students receive high-quality literacy instruction. This position leads the development and improvement for coaches and teachers by providing professional learning, observing classroom instruction, modeling literacy practices and routines, conducting feedback conversations, and analyzing data by working with educators to support implementation of best practices in literacy. The Literacy Consultant serves as the literacy content expert and provides support on curriculum, high-quality instructional practices (modeling, showing, explaining, demonstrating, exploring ideas, encouraging, questioning, recalling), and the science of teaching reading.
The Literacy Consultant will also participate with a variety of professional affiliations and networks as an opportunity to enhance their own professional learning while also coordinating and communicating information to districts as appropriate.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities
- Knowledge of current state literacy standards in grades pre-K-5
- Well versed in assessment literacy to support educators in implementing an assessment framework that includes frequent use of formative, screening, and diagnostic measures to inform student progress and instructional needs.
- Promote the use of data from diagnostic tools to determine the necessary additional supports and interventions needed by individual pupils in grades pre-K to 3 in order to be reading at grade level.
- Possess the ability and skill set to work with adults that promotes positive and productive interactions and outcomes.
- Maintains knowledge of relevant literacy research or evidence-based practices to support educators in enhancing literacy instruction.
- Understand assessment protocols (WIDA) and implement evidence-based literacy strategies that support English Learners (EL), ensuring the integration of culturally responsive practices and differentiated instruction.
- Embeds appropriate instructional technology practices to enhance literacy outcomes
- Support all literacy coaches and elementary teachers in the service area and be available to support all districts in alignment with the Read by Grade Three Law.
- Attend the Essential Instructional Practices Institute, Literacy Coaching Network Professional Learning Opportunities, Coaching Intensives, Quarterly Meetings, and Monthly Meetings to support their learning around the Essentials.
- Use the Coaching Modules and the Essential Instructional Practices modules to support teachers learning around the Essentials.
- Develop and analyze educational materials and tools in order to provide coaching and training on
- Conduct and coordinate training, consultations, and coaching supports at local, regional, and state
- Remain current and knowledgeable of current legislation, research trends, and evidence-based
assessments to support integration within and across Eaton RESA.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (If applicable):
Required
- State of Michigan Elementary Teaching Certification
- Reading Specialist Certification
- Trained in the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
- Master's degree with advanced coursework in reading or has completed a professional development
- Five (5) years or more experience in early literacy and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
- Two (2) years or more experience with coaching staff
- Exhibits understanding of The Essential Instructional Practices in Literacy pre-K-3.
- Deep understanding of the scientific approach to teaching reading and the evidence-based
- Promote research supported differentiated instruction and intensive interventions.
- Comfortable using assessment tools and the data to support educators in enhancing practice.
- Diagnosing student needs and identifying evidence based practices to support those needs .
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize problem solve while working on multiple tasks while ensuring deadlines are
- Ability to develop and maintain effective coaching and consultative relationships with educators.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills to work closely with internal and external partners.
- Sound verbal and written communication skills to develop and coordinate the delivery of key
outside of the organization.
- Ability to utilize technology used to implement work responsibilities.
- Knowledge of the implementation of MTSS to improve equity and opportunity for all learners at
