Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Special Education, the ASD consultant provides consultation to administrators, community agencies, educators, paraprofessionals, and parents who are directly involved with the education of students eligible for special education programs and/or services under the Autism eligibility.

Position provides professional development and assists building teams in each district on supporting students with ASD. Position assists building administrators, ASD teams and staff with interventions and recommendations to improve students’ functioning and progress in the school setting. Position collaborates with LEA and ERESA administrators and staff on the implementation of programming for students with Autism. Position assists teams in the development of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Positive Behavioral Support Plans as needed.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively across systems and departments with instructional staff and administrators to build capacity for data collection, problem solving and data-driven instructional decision making processes that support implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) across core instruction, strategic and intensive intervention and assessment practices to positively impact student growth and achievement.
  • Provide ASD consultation services to Eaton RESA districts.
  • Facilitate/Participate in ASD team meetings for the LEA’s and Meadowview School
  • Develop data collection tools for student behavior and academic progress
  • Collaborate with the LEA Directors of Special Education and ERESA Special Education Administration to determine the level of support needed in each building for students with Autism based on the skill development of the teams and the needs of the students.
  • Assist LEA building teams to develop the capacity to support their students with autism.
  • Meet regularly with building teams to assess the need for additional training and to evaluate team effectiveness.
  • Attend IEPT meetings to provide guidance and support relative to meeting the needs of students with autism in the least restrictive environment.
  • Assist ERESA and LEA building teams with evaluating observation data and make recommendations to the building teams for plan modifications or new strategy implementation to support students with Autism.
  • Provide information to LEA teachers/administrators, students and parents regarding community resources available to support students with Autism.
  • Offer guidance to LEA and ERESA administration and staff regarding IDEA and Michigan special education requirements related to ASD.
  • Collect and analyze data to: support continuous improvement of ASD programs/services, support systems level problem solving at the district building or program level, and inform decision making regarding implementation of these programs and services
  • Plan, facilitate and/or deliver professional learning and evidence based strategies for students with Autism
  • Develop training materials to assist administrators and staff with providing programming and services
  • Coordinate and collaborate with outside agencies for resources to support families and students with Autism including Autism Alliance of Michigan, Mid-Michigan Autism Association, START and CMH
  • Coordinate with LEA staff and community resources to provide services for students with Autism including school year and extended school year programming
  • Support the implementation of the Peer-to-Peer programs for students with Autism including management of the fiscal resources assigned to this program, allocation or purchased service resources, and completing fiscal reports as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS (If Applicable):

Required

  • A valid Michigan teaching certificate with Autism endorsement.
  • Full approval or qualify for full approval as a Teacher Consultant for Autism.

Required

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:

  • Masters’ Degree in Special Education.
  • Three years of satisfactory teaching experience, not less than two years of which shall be in teaching students with a disability in a special education classroom.

Desired

  • Professional experience with individuals on the Autism Spectrum in a school setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of special education laws, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of techniques necessary to develop appropriate instructional plans for students who are on the autistic spectrum.
  • Knowledge of child development and behavioral health.
  • Advanced skill in behavioral management.
  • Skill with use of technology to implement work responsibilities.
  • Skill with consultation role, including organizational and communication needed.
  • Ability to provide coaching and services to staff who service students with Autism
  • Ability to adapt quickly to a wide range of behaviors characteristic of students with autism.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and effective coaching and consultative relationships with administrators, staff, parents, community partners and youth.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control under stressful situations.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality in dealing with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and within teams to accomplish identified goals and strategies.

  • Position may require work in the evenings or summer months as requested
  • Position requires the employee to provide his/her own transportation for job related travel.
  • Position requires regular and predictable attendance at the workplace.
