The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 4 located in Anchorage!

What You Will Be Doing:

This position is responsible for coordinating the management of commercial, subsistence, and personal use fisheries for salmon and herring in the Bristol Bay and Prince William Sound/Copper River management areas. This is your chance to be part of some of the largest and most exciting fisheries in the state. Bristol Bay by itself has the largest sockeye salmon fishery in the world the largest herring fishery in the state. Prince William Sound is consistently in the top three salmon fisheries in the state and the Copper River has built a reputation as one of the premier salmon fisheries in the world.

Our Organization, Mission, And Culture:

This position reviews all management actions and the basis for actions to ensure they are appropriate and consistent with management plans, department policy, and sustainable fisheries management. This contributes to the division's success through frequently meeting with Sport Fish Division to coordinate news releases and emergency orders, review proposed regulations and petition responses, and arranging meetings between the divisions throughout the year. It also contributes to the Division's success as it coordinates and supervises preparation of Board of Fisheries regulatory proposals concerning commercial, subsistence and personal use fisheries for Bristol Bay and Prince William Sound/Copper River salmon and herring, and region wide shellfish and groundfish.

The Working Conditions You Can Expect:

This position, located in Anchorage, regularly travels to work with staff in Cordova, King Salmon, and Dillingham. You will participate in a wide range of daily activities from fisheries management meetings with Department leadership to flying surveys and participating in at sea assessment of fishery resources.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • A minimum of 5 years of staff supervision experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of commercial fisheries management experience.
  • Experience with Board of Fish process including staff comment development, presentations, and petition response.
  • Experience with contentious fisheries management issues.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management;

AND

One year of advanced professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 3, Fish Culturist 3, Wildlife Biologist 3, Habitat Biologist 3, or Fisheries Geneticist 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

  • at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
  • at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
