What you will be doing:
Under general supervision, this position will play a lead role with tagging studies in the Kuskokwim Area and may assist with other research projects as needed. These projects use a variety of fish capture methods and the incumbent will be involved with operational planning, crew training, fieldwork, logistics, and the install and removal of telemetry monitoring infrastructure. In addition, this position involves data analysis, report writing, and report editing as requested for Kuskokwim Area research projects.

This is an opportunity to conduct fisheries research that has direct application to the sustainable management of a unique and wild salmon fishery. Kuskokwim Area fisheries are characterized by a large traditional subsistence base, small-scale commercial fisheries, and complex multi-species salmon migratory patterns within the Kuskokwim River and smaller coastal drainages. Kuskokwim Area stakeholders are actively engaged in fisheries research and management activities. This position will be part of a dedicated team of researchers actively engaged in meaningful research in the Kuskokwim Area.

The working conditions you can expect:
During the summer months, this position will be primarily based out of Bethel and work will involve travel to remote locations and rural communities throughout the Kuskokwim Area to conduct outreach, train field staff, and participate in data collection activities. Travel is by open skiff, fixed wing aircraft, and helicopter and working hours are often irregular and exposure to inclement weather may occur. The incumbent will have office space and access to a bunkhouse when working out of Bethel. Outside of the summer months, the incumbent will have an office space in Anchorage, where the daily work environment will be predominantly office based.

During the field seasons, this position will require frequent travel via small aircraft and outboard skiffs to remote field sites for overnight or extended stays to track salmon and access tag recovery sites.

Who we are looking for:
The incumbent is responsible for acting as the tagging project leader for tagging studies in the Kuskokwim Area. Tagging projects have a range of objectives that may include estimating abundance, spawning distribution, and migration characteristics.

Our ideal candidate will have a work history that reflects the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). These traits must be documented in your cover letter. If you do not have experience with any of these traits listed below, simply say so.

• Experience conducting salmon research in remote locations using technical methods, such as weirs, counting towers, mark–recapture, sonar, or surveys.
• Experience using statistical methods to summarize large biological datasets.
• Experience supervising lower level staff.
• Experience authoring and reviewing technical documents.
• Experience with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel and Access.
