Special Education Coordinator of the Autism School
SUMMARY
The Special Education Coordinator of the Autism School is responsible for assuring that the program is providing a high quality educational program for students with autism.
ONGOING DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for having working knowledge of Ohio Department of Education (ODE) licensing regulations, ODE Academic Content Standards grades K-12 .
2. Promotes a positive image by representing the Autism School and the Achievement Centers for Children in a courteous, professional manner.
3. Adheres to all Policies/Procedures in the Achievement Centers for Children Staff Handbook and Autism School Operating Manual.
4. Promotes a team approach throughout the agency.
5. Works in family-centered partnership with the individuals and families served by the Achievement Centers for Children.
6. Practices safe work habits and contributes to ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.
7. Attends continuing education courses and keeps abreast of new techniques and trends in the field of Education/Special Education/Autism through conferences and professional memberships.
8. Fosters and maintains good public relations with all community sources.
9. Conducts self with professional dignity; understands the importance of good human relations; able to motivate others; and possesses initiative and good judgment.

Education, Training and/or Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.
2. Minimum of 5 years teaching experience students with autism, communication and severe behavioral challenges
3. Minimum of 2 years supervisory/experience of private or public school or program
4. Training and minimum of 2 years experience in behavioral intervention methods and development of FBAs/BIPs.
Personal Skills and Abilities
1. Ability to instruct and support staff on evidence based practices for students in grades preK-12 with autism.
2. Good interpersonal and communication skills with families and teachers.
3. Excellent teaching skills
4. Good organizational skills
5. Ability to work independently.
6. Excellent problem-solving skills in high stress situations.
7. Display sincere and enthusiastic interest in working with all children and families.
8. Act in a professional manner and maintain confidentiality of families.
9. Foundation of satisfactory supervisory skills.

- Assists in monitoring the Autism School classrooms, playground and office areas to allow for safe, efficient and organized delivery of services.
- Assists in monitoring all equipment in safe working order, notifying supervisor of repairs/replacements as needed.
- Practices appropriate safety techniques related to Infection Control and Universal Precautions including hand washing, toy disinfecting and laundry.
7. Attends continuing education courses and keeps abreast of new techniques and trends in the field of Education/Special Education/Autism through conferences and professional memberships.
8. Fosters and maintains good public relations with all community sources.

- Provides consultation and supervision to autism school classroom staff responsible for the creation and implementation of individual education plans and evaluation team reports.
- Provides direct supervision and evaluation of staff as assigned by VP of Education.
- Supervises the development of interventions, IEP goals and/or services, functional behavior assessments and behavior plans for students needing behavior support.
- Participates in the intake/enrollment process, aims to assist in keeping program at capacity and helps to coordinate services with the school districts such as transportation, related services and ETR completion.
- Maintains and monitors all IEP compliance components including: meeting invitations to parent and school district, team planning meetings for IEP goals and objectives, progress reports, PR01s, and any other compliance-related documentation and meetings.
- Trains and supports staff in the creation of IEP documents with pre-meeting preparation and internal monitoring for accuracy.
- Collaborates with administrative assistant to maintain digital record for student data base.
- Provides crisis support to students and staff when student behaviors are escalated.
- Serves as contact with school districts to arrange technology/communication needs.
- Serves as school transportation coordinator to establish and maintain transportation-provider information.
- Serves as member of in-take team and hiring team.
- Understands and maintains the collaborative relationship with the leadership team of Autism School and Educational Services Center.
- Collaborate with school leadership team to plan monthly staff meetings and educational workshop opportunities for staff that includes creating and delivering professional development.
- Attend all Agency, Education Department and Autism School staff meetings and in-service trainings as requested.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree in Education/Special Education
- Experience in Ohio Department of Education (ODE) licensing, ODE regulations and Academic Content Standards - Extended grades K-12
- Working understanding of established and emerging evidences based methods, i.e. TEACCH, DIR model, PECS, Assistive Technology, RTI, ABA/Discrete Trials, total communication
- Experience with ODE compliance as it relates to special education including: IEPs, ETRs, development of FBAs/BIPs, Restraint and Seclusion law, transition initiatives and practices, continuum of services, parental rights, etc.
- Experience with Word, Publisher, Excel and use of video and digital cameras
