Full Time: $23.52 P/H

Patrols an assigned area of the County; answers complaints and requests for assistance; investigates crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses; questions suspects; collects, photographs, secures and labels evidence; makes arrests; testifies in court. Enforces motor vehicle and criminal code; enforces and upholds all laws and ordinances as set forth by the State of Georgia and the County of Effingham. Serves various types of civil and criminal papers; explains briefly the meaning of paper being served. Cooperates with law enforcement personnel or other governmental agencies in making investigations and arrests. Transports prisoners, mental patients, and intoxicated persons to institutions for confinement or treatment; provides transportation in certain emergencies. Provides protective escort; maintains order at public gatherings; directs traffic; escorts funeral processions. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents; maintains logs and reports of gas mileage, vehicle maintenance, and shift activities. Receives and files reports of crimes; receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, or other software programs. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems. Maintains, cleans, and stocks law enforcement vehicle. Administers first aid and CPR when needed. Educates the community on crime prevention; interacts in the community; assists in community evacuations; advises referral assistance to the community. Assists jailers in processing offenders in the system. Conducts vehicle and trailer inspections.

Deputy Sheriffs assigned to Road Patrol perform the following additional duties:

Investigates accidents and criminal activity; assures integrity of witnesses; processes arrested persons; fingerprints and searches arrestees; searches vehicles for evidence and contraband. Searches for wanted or missing persons. Makes field notes; takes reports of missing juveniles and adults. Assists disabled motorists; removes inoperable cars from roadway; clears debris from roadways; removes livestock from roadway; investigates suspicious vehicles. Assists fire and rescue. Manages intoxicated persons, juveniles, and crime scenes. Mediates domestic violence calls. Performs license and seatbelt check points; checks defective equipment on vehicles. Arrests DUI drivers; prepares and maintains monthly reports for DUI Grant. Participates in statewide and national seatbelt activities; participates in multi-jurisdictional checkpoints throughout the state. Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed. Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by Police Academy training; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving basic law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must possess and maintain a valid P.O.S.T. certification and certifications in Intoxilyzer 5000, Radar Operations, and Standardized Field Sobriety.
