At the Mercy Brown Bag Program, “Seniors helping seniors” is at the heart of our mission, supported by Elder Care Alliance’s Mercy Retirement and Care Center. For 43 years our volunteers and team members have lovingly filled bags and distributed fresh produce, healthy grains, lean proteins and more.
We sort, pack, and distribute over 122,000 grocery bags to 80 sites throughout Alameda County, reaching more than 9,000 food-insecure older adults. We also run mobile food pantries throughout the county, bringing variety and choice to where older adults live and congregate.

About This Career Opportunity
This individual will manage the operations of the Mercy Brown Bag Program at our Mercy Retirement & Care Center located in Oakland, CA. Key responsibilities will encompass providing overall direction for the program, supervising staff, managing budgets, and engaging in strategic planning for all operational activities of the Mercy Brown Bag Program. This includes oversight of the warehouse, facilities, personnel, and volunteers, all aimed at ensuring the program's long-term sustainability.
Responsibilities
Operational Management
- Ensure that the program has a long-term strategy that aligns with its mission and consistently makes timely progress towards its goals.
- Provide leadership in the development of programmatic, organizational, and financial plans in collaboration with the Advisory Board and staff, and implement the approved plans and policies.
- Maintain official records and documentation while ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.
- Develop and implement operational policies and guidelines.
- Oversee the design, marketing, promotion, delivery, and quality of programs, products, and services, including food supply, access, and distribution. Manage a database to track consumer interactions and food inventory.
- Ensure that facilities are well-maintained to provide a safe and clean working environment for employees and volunteers, and that equipment is properly maintained and updated for inventory processing.
- Oversee the organization’s staff, including recruitment, hiring, performance management, compensation, and termination processes.
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit, manage, motivate, evaluate, and retain volunteers to achieve organizational objectives.
Marketing and Advocacy
- Stay informed about key developments and trends within the field.
- Promote the organization's activities, programs, and objectives.
- Build strong and collaborative relationships with various community groups and organizations.
- Act as a representative of the program and the organization's perspective to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
- Maintain a robust website, a regular newsletter, and an annual report that highlight the program's achievements and acknowledge its volunteers and financial donors.
- Act as a thought leader and advocate at the city, county, and state levels regarding issues of elder poverty, food insecurity, and hunger.
- Collaborate with consultants and partners to enhance our understanding of senior hunger and their needs through research, surveys, and direct engagement.
Budget and Finance
- Be responsible for maintaining sound financial practices.
- Collaborate with team members and the Finance department to develop a budget, adhering to established budgetary guidelines.
- Verify that sufficient funds are accessible to enable the program to fulfill its objectives.
Fund Development
- Collaborate with the Fund Development team to design and implement an annual fundraising strategy.
- Ensure oversight and accountability for the approved development plan, adhering to ethical fundraising principles.
- Proactively identify funding opportunities, which includes managing grant writing, engaging with donors, and developing and overseeing financial campaigns.
- Work in close partnership with the Finance team to comprehend budget forecasts, ensuring that the fundraising strategy aligns with these financial requirements.
- Supervise the execution of the fundraising plan and manage the team members responsible.
- Cultivate and maintain ongoing relationships with major donors.
- Develop and manage a strategy aimed at establishing a large, sustainable base of annual individual donors.
- Oversee the planning and execution of special events.
- Keep track of community and regional trends, adjusting fundraising strategies as needed.
Qualifications – Position Requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- A bachelor's degree is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is acceptable.
- Demonstrated experience in a managerial role is required.
- Familiarity with proper food handling and storage protocols is necessary.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of successful experience in Development is required.
- Cleared Criminal Record clearance through the Department of Social Services prior to presence in the community.
- Health screening and TB test results not older than 6 months.
- Current First Aid Training and Certifications as per Title 22.
- Skilled in utilizing MS Office applications
- Proven excellence in organizational, managerial, and leadership capabilities is expected.
