At the Mercy Brown Bag Program, “Seniors helping seniors” is at the heart of our mission, supported by Elder Care Alliance’s Mercy Retirement and Care Center. For 43 years our volunteers and team members have lovingly filled bags and distributed fresh produce, healthy grains, lean proteins and more.
We sort, pack, and distribute over 122,000 grocery bags to 80 sites throughout Alameda County, reaching more than 9,000 food-insecure older adults. We also run mobile food pantries throughout the county, bringing variety and choice to where older adults live and congregate.

About This Career Opportunity
The Brown Bag Volunteer Coordinator plays a crucial role within the Brown Bag team, overseeing volunteer initiatives, providing support, monitoring activities, and ensuring recognition across our on-site grocery, warehouse, and engaging with community partners.
This position will collaborate closely with the Brown Bag Development Manager to organize Corporate Volunteer groups in relation to grants and fundraising efforts.
Given the dynamic nature a small team, the Volunteer Coordinator may also be required to assist the Brown Bag Director or Leadership team with special projects essential to Brown Bag’s success. Additionally, the Volunteer Coordinator will step in for the Field and Operations Managers during their absence.
Responsibilities
- Serve as an ambassador for Mercy Brown Bag, engaging with senior volunteers, donors, partners, and recipients, and effectively representing the organization in all interactions with key stakeholders.
- Manage the recruitment process, initiate Sterling Volunteer background checks for new volunteers at Brown Bag headquarters (HQ), which encompasses the Mercy and Chapman warehouses, the CommonSpirit grocery store, and other locations within the BB partner community as required.
- Direct the implementation and enhancement of Volgistics, the volunteer management software for MBBP, throughout all partner communities. This involves training volunteers and site coordinators on new functionalities and ensuring a successful deployment at each location.
- Collaborate with the MBBP management team to launch, support, and grow corporate partnership volunteer initiatives, fostering these connections to create additional opportunities.
- Serve as the representative of MBBP to all volunteers, providing them with support, motivation, and maintaining their commitment through continuous communication, newsletters, and social media engagement.
- Work alongside MBBP Management to cultivate a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment.
- Providing exceptional customer service to all recipients and foster relationships with partners, in collaboration with the Field Operations Manager.
- Support Special projects which may encompass Nutrition Education initiatives, seasonal holiday projects, or other ad hoc activities mandated by state or federal regulations, collaborating with operations managers as necessary.
- Organize an annual celebration for all MBBP volunteers.
- Develop unique rewards and incentives to ensure that volunteers remain enthusiastically involved.
- Oversee and maintain accurate inventory records to ensure optimal stock levels.
- Assist the Field Operations Manager in fulfilling compliance requirements, such as annual volunteer training, Civil Justice, Food Safety, and audits of Terms and Conditions.
- Support the Brown Bag Director or Assistant Director as needed during site inspections and visits from auditors, funders, sponsors, and donors.
- Inform the supervisor of any safety concerns, unexpected delays, recipient issues, or complaints/grievances.
- Carry out additional responsibilities or tasks as directed by the Operations Managers or the Director of the MBB Program.
Qualifications – Position Requirements
- At least 18 years of age.
- Cleared Criminal Record clearance through the Department of Social Services prior to presence in the community.
- Health screening and TB test results not older than 6 months.
- Current First Aid Training and Certifications as per Title 22.
Skilled in utilizing MS Office applications - Previous volunteer experience
- Non-profit experience
- Knowledge of food safety standards.
- Operations or partner management experience

- Knowledge about dementia is highly desirable.
- Must understand health care environment and the medical considerations for older adults..
