POSITION OVERVIEW

The Foreman is the leader of Elder Construction's self-perform team, responsible for ensuring efficient planning and productive execution, overseeing field crews to carry out project assignments while maintaining safety, quality, and adherence to schedules. The Foreman provides clear direction, ensures appropriate training, and provides mentorship to crew members, ensuring the team's growth and the consistent delivery of exceptional work. They perform work in the field, proactively troubleshoot challenges, resolve day-to-day issues, and escalate larger concerns to the Project Executive when necessary. This individual must have strong time management skills and the ability to regularly assess and prioritize competing demands. The Foreman is critical to Elder Construction’s success, driving project outcomes and exemplifying the company’s commitment to building purpose into people.

  • Projects (55%) –
  • Preconstruction: provides feedback on self-perform capabilities, materials and required schedule
  • Planning: responsible for efficient planning and forecasting of schedules, resources (materials, equipment, and labor)
  • Execution: responsible for supporting the execution of project schedule commitments, quality of work and safety
  • People (25%) – responsible for mentorship, performance management, hiring, and resource forecasting.
  • Process (10%) - has authority to recommend process improvement, while balancing project and people responsibilities.
  • Unplanned Work (10%) – any unplanned work that may arise from projects, people or process.

Essential Responsibilities

Project Leadership

The project responsibility of the Foreman is to drive project outcomes by aligning resources, maintaining quality, and upholding safety standards.

  • This includes providing oversight, aligning direction to meet project outcomes while meeting or exceeding industry quality standards.
  • Forecasts and aligns resources by understanding material needs, the adequate labor to accomplish a schedule, and providing the right tools and training to execute the work.
  • This role requires a strong knowledge of commercial construction materials, methods and processes as this is a hands-on role which includes providing on-site supervision and will occasionally require performing work on projects.

People Leadership

The Foreman supervises and fosters a high performing, engaged team of craft professionals.

  • Hires and retains qualified craft professionals, taking responsibility to motivate and set expectations for performance, provides consistent accountability and is invested in developing the team through timely feedback and mentorship.
  • Holds regular one-to-one meetings with all direct reports 3 times per year, prepares and delivers employee reviews, and facilitates career growth opportunities for team members.
  • Has the ability to assess and understand specific strengths, technical skills and performance capabilities of team members in order to effectively staff to meet project needs.
  • Continuously forecasts monthly labor allocation across projects, while also anticipating long-term needs.
  • Meets bimonthly with PXs to discuss staffing, training and performance.
  • Regularly communicates out team member allocations to all parties (weekly or biweekly).
  • Responsible for working effectively with Superintendents and Project Managers, fostering communication and collaboration to understand project needs.
  • The Foreman must demonstrate, foster, and uphold the core values of Elder Construction, aligning execution while ensuring culture alignment amongst the team.

Process Leadership

The Foreman ensures operational excellence through organized processes, efficient tool use, and communication.

  • Communicates with Shop and Equipment department details regarding the functionality, maintenance and organization of tools, equipment, fleet and shop space. Shop and Equipment team supports the operational readiness and needs of the Foreman to accomplish production and project goals.
  • Ensures organizational processes are followed for timecards and time-off requests, credit cards, and personnel documentation.
  • Ensures safety needs are met through adequate training.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the team member is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The team member is frequently required to climb or balance and stoop or kneel.
  • The team member must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
