Hours: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm
JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Cultural Arts and Events Manager, the Museum Curator is responsible for administering the finances, staffing, special events, exhibits and collections management of the Museum. The Museum Curator supervises the Program Manager and supports them in the development and implementation of educational programs in accordance with the Museum’s mission. The Museum Curator responsibilities will include areas of budget, marketing, collection management, care of exhibits, educational programs, special events and staffing of the Museum Campus.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for day-to-day operations of the Museum, including staffing for open hours, programs and events.
- Alongside Program Manager, oversees the planning and execution of museum special events and educational classes, and general programs.
- Responsible for research, design and installation of exhibits.
- Acts as the liaison to the Historical Society, attending meetings when necessary.
- With support from the Cultural Arts Manager, responsible for development and oversight of the Museum’s budget, including tracking revenue and expenses on an ongoing basis.
- Collaborate with the Marketing Department to increase community awareness of the Museum through social media and other forms of advertising.
- Recruits, trains, schedules, supervises and evaluates volunteers and staff to assist with educational seminars, work duties, museum operations and special projects.
- Responsible for accessioning, deaccessioning, registration and cataloging the artifacts and collections according to the Collection Policy Manual, following acceptable museum procedures.
- Responsible for research, design and installation of exhibits.
- Supervise the museum when support staff is not scheduled.
- Monitor collection conservation needs and recommend necessary action.
- Prepares reports as needed, including monthly reports.
- Assist the Cultural Arts Manager with planning and implementation of Park District events as needed, including but not limited to Bounce Back to School and Halloween Fest.
- Ensure continued care and maintenance of all Museum facilities.
- Facilitate Farmhouse Restoration Projects.
- Comply with District safety policies.
- Assist with community wide special events not specifically related to the museum programming area.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Works with staff to develop goals and objectives.
- Partner with other community organizations to facilitate projects and events which support the Museum’s mission.
- Assists the Museum Program Manager with programming as needed.
- Oversees the development and monitoring of the museum operating budget.
- Ensure that the Collections Policy meets professional museum standards.
- Applies for grants through local, state, federal and private funding sources.
- Schedules programs and tours and provides staff to work those events.
- Regularly inspects and reports to the facilities supervisor on the cleanliness and operational efficiency of the museum.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
- Demonstrate excellent time management skills.
- Ability to effectively manage a small team of staff and volunteers. work in a team based environment.
- Strong customer service skills, including money handling and conflict management.
- Demonstrate computer skills, including, but not limited to: Catalogit Museum software and Google Workspace , Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to use good judgment at all times.
- Good knowledge of pertinent safety precautions.
- Ability to maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and volunteers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s Degree in History, Museum Studies, Museum Administration or the equivalent. 1 years managerial or administrative experience preferred. Must be CPR certified or willing to obtain within three months of hire. Must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License.
