What are the responsibilities and job description for the CMT Field Support position at EMC Engineering Services Inc.?
A CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS TESTING FIELD TECHNICIAN performs field observation, testing, sampling and inspection of soils, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt and structural steel placement and documents findings. Note: All disciplines may not be encountered on every project. Under the direction of more senior technicians or staff professionals and project managers, you will perform routine field and/or laboratory tests and assist in more complex tasks, as required.
Duties may include:
- Soils – In-place density testing using nuclear density gauge or sand cone methods, Proctor [moisture density], Atterberg limits, and sieve analysis methodology.
- Aggregates – Sampling and performing sieve analysis.
- Concrete/Grout/Masonry – Sampling and visual observation, performing air content and slump tests, testing compressive and flexural strength, taking tests of mortar and grout, and obtaining core samples.
- Asphalt – Sampling and performing HMA [hot mix asphalt] tests in both field and laboratory settings using nuclear density gauge and core machines in the field; and solvents and sampling at high temperatures in the laboratory.
- Daily travel to project sites is expected, with overnight stays when necessary to meet client schedules.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- AA/AS preferred
- BSCE graduates with EIT will be considered
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate in English with internal and external clients
- Basic math skills
- Valid driver’s license required; must have satisfactory driving record in accordance with EMC fleet insurance requirements
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
- Understanding of construction practices and procedures
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with OSHA guidelines and directives, in conjunction with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards
- Must be able to withstand regular exposure to outdoor worksite weather conditions that may be wet and/or humid environments, with extreme cold and/or heat; sites may be moderate to moderately loud
- Must be able to perform tasks that require long-term standing and/or repetitive motions
- May be required to drive long distances daily
- Must be able to regularly lift, move, or shake up to 40 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 60-80 pounds, and occasionally move more than 100 pounds
- Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone
