Description

The Sheehan lab is a translational research lab focused on developing new therapies for individuals with sickle cell disease. We are seeking an individual to perform experiments in a humanized mouse model and analyze the changes in red cells and other blood cells as a result of base editing or other gene therapies. Experience with complex, fragile mouse models and cell culture essential. Experiments will be designed independently with support from the principal investigator. The candidate will maintain records, files and logs of work performed in laboratory notebooks and computer databases, and perform simple statistical analyses with guidance from the lab's statistician, compile data and records results of studies for publications, grants and seminar presentations. Handling of human blood samples is required; proof of immunization is required and potentially additional immunizations may be needed.

Applicant must have a PhD in a relevant field.

Key Responsibilities

• Problem solve research challenges and model development, as applicable.
• Contribute discrete components of a larger project under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher.
• Prepare complete documentation of research activities for reference purposes, including following applicable data management protocols.
• Analyze, interpret, and document research findings for review.
• Compare actual and expected results and suggest solutions to correct the deviations.
• Evaluate existing research or modeling techniques and recommend improvements to ensure quality and productivity.
• Assist in the preparation of proposals and reports.
• Assist in teaching classes.

Career Path

The postdoc is primarily a training position. The intent is for the postdoc to gain additional research, professional, and in some cases teaching experience to facilitate future transition to a research or academic career.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
