What are the responsibilities and job description for the EMT Instructor position at EMS University?
EMSU (dba EMS Universal Education) is seeking experienced and qualified EMTs and Paramedics to join our growing team immediately to provide instruction in various courses! These positions may require weekday, evening, and weekend availability (Shift pick-up flexibility). As an integral part of the EMSU team, the instructor's job is to ensure that as many students successfully complete their course as is possible while strictly adhering to policy, guidelines, and regulations. The EMT Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality emergency medical training to students in a classroom and hands-on setting and is crucial in ensuring student success.
As an EMT Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching EMT Classes, NREMT Refreshers, CPR, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens classes to both groups and individuals. Additionally, you will be expected to help with Practical Skills Verification and Training as a part of our EMT Program in Union City.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure efficiency and strict adherence to the daily schedule.
- Prepare and carry out lesson plans and other student activities.
- Teach students using a variety of techniques including, but not limited to didactic lectures, practical demonstration, monitoring of group activities, as well as evaluation.
- Collect, review, and assess student work.
- Coordinate activities with other personnel to ensure student success.
- Find, evaluate, and address deficiencies that may occur during class.
- Evaluate student performance during the course on a continual basis.
- Enter grades appropriately.
- Ensure accurate and complete reporting.
- Take attendance.
- Report passing and failing grades.
- Ensure fair and honest reporting of student evaluations.
- Ensure proper compliance with state and national guidelines/regulations relating to examination procedures.
- Keep information confidential as per guidelines.
- Attend regular and/or special instructor meetings and training.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Must have at least three (3) years of academic or clinical experience in the practice of emergency medicine or prehospital care in the last five (5) years
AND
- Active California State EMT or Paramedic Certification
- CPR/BLS Certification
- Clear, legible handwriting
- Thorough understanding of EMS training equipment
- Thorough understanding of prehospital care (emergency/non-emergency)
- Basic understanding of technology (for scheduling, attendance, communication, etc.).
- EMS Instructional Strategies Course Certificate (40hrs minimum) or equivalent. (An EMS Instructional Strategies Course Certificate (40hrs minimum) is required to become an EMT Instructor with EMSU. If an equivalent has not already been obtained, we are fortunate to offer this course certification FREE of charge for all new hire instructor positions.
Preferred Criteria (Not Required):
- Instructional experience is preferred.
- Bachelor's degree
- NREMT Certification

The ideal candidate will also have previous teaching or training experience, strong communication and instructional skills, as well as the ability to work well with students of all levels. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is essential. The position requires consistency in shift pickup to ensure that we can train our future first responders as quickly and effectively as possible while strictly adhering to policy, guidelines, and regulations.
