Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee and manage our company’s financial operations. Reporting directly to the President, this role is pivotal in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and operational efficiency in a fast-paced, growth-driven environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting and payroll, particularly in service-related industries where labor and parts are billed to clients, such as large-scale plumbing companies or similar service organizations.
This position requires a process-oriented, data-driven leader with a passion for driving efficiency and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage all aspects of the accounting cycle, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, payroll, and financial statement preparation.
- Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes.
- Oversee payroll processes to ensure timely and accurate payroll for all employees, including compliance with wage laws and tax reporting.
- Collaborate with HR to maintain employee records and address payroll-related inquiries.
- Ensure compliance with state and local sales tax regulations, including timely preparation and submission of sales tax returns.
- Maintain thorough records of taxable transactions and stay updated on relevant tax changes.
- Develop and manage annual budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Monitor performance against budgets, identify variances, and recommend corrective actions.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
- Provide training and ensure adherence to internal accounting policies and procedures.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, facilitating smooth and efficient audit processes.
- Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and standards.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in financial operations.
- Leverage data to provide actionable insights and support strategic decision-making.
- Utilize QuickBooks for accounting processes, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Explore opportunities to optimize technology to support financial management.
Qualifications
Education, Experience, Skills and Certification:
- CPA designation required.
- 7 years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Experience in a service-related industry where labor and parts are billed to clients (e.g., large plumbing companies or similar service organizations).
- Candidates with experience as senior auditors in mid-sized or large audit firms looking to transition from public accounting to industry are encouraged to apply.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks and other financial software.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of payroll processes and compliance, as well as sales tax regulations and reporting requirements.
- Process-oriented and detail-driven, with a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to effectively manage and develop a team.
- Highly organized and adept at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
