Job Title: Sterile Processing Technician (SPT)

Location: Cheyenne VAMC, WY
Job Type: Contract (1-year base with 4 option years)
Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8-hour shifts (No nights, weekends, or holidays)

Job Summary

The Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) will support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) by ensuring the proper decontamination, sterilization, and distribution of medical and surgical instruments. The SPT will be assigned to a fixed facility (Cheyenne, WY or Loveland, CO) and will work in compliance with infection control, safety, and VA quality assurance standards to maintain a sterile healthcare environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesSterile Processing & Equipment Management

• Perform decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment.
• Operate sterilizers, ultrasonic washers, Medivators, and high-level disinfecting systems.
• Inspect instruments for damage, functionality, and proper assembly.
• Package and prepare instruments using correct sterilization methods (Steam, V-Pro, Trophon).
• Conduct quality control checks to verify sterilization effectiveness (biological indicators, chemical indicators).

Inventory & Logistics

• Maintain accurate inventory records of sterile supplies and ensure first-in, first-out (FIFO) stocking.
• Monitor supply levels and coordinate replenishment as needed.
• Assist in handling controlled substances and ensuring proper storage compliance.

Compliance & Safety

• Follow OSHA, CDC, VA, and Joint Commission standards for sterile processing.
• Maintain strict infection control protocols to prevent contamination.
• Participate in VA quality assurance programs and training.
• Ensure proper documentation and tracking of all sterilization processes.

Team Collaboration & Training

• Work closely with surgical teams, physicians, and anesthesia staff to ensure timely instrument availability.
• Assist in training new SPTs and staff on sterilization procedures and equipment use.
• Participate in VA-mandated training and continuing education for sterile processing.

Qualifications & RequirementsEducation & Certification

• Required Certification:
• Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or
• Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
• Minimum Experience: 1 year in sterile processing

Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in decontamination, sterilization, and assembly of medical instruments
• Experience with Pyxis, OmniCell, and automated medication dispensing systems
• Knowledge of VA healthcare protocols, infection control, and safety regulations
• Strong attention to detail in handling sterile equipment and maintaining compliance
• Excellent communication skills to interact with multidisciplinary teams

Work Environment & Additional Information

• Fixed-site assignment (No rotation between Cheyenne and Loveland locations)
• No on-call requirements
• Scrubs provided by the facility and laundered on-site
• Credentialing Requirements: Resume, federal employment forms, background check, and two forms of ID

Job Types: Full-time, Contract, Travel nursing

Pay: $30.00 - $45.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week

• 5x8
• 8 hour shift
• Monday to Friday
• Morning shift
